Error loading Mario Kart Double Dash

Anybody had an issue with Mario Kart Double Dash on a PURPLE Gamecube?
The game starts to load, but before the intro video starts, I get the error below. I even get the same error with the bonus disc.

Before you ask:
I tested the game in another GC (Silver), it works fine, the disc do not have scratches.
I tested another copy of MKDD in the purple GC, it works fine. The only difference is that the game that does not work is the canadian version (case only, the game should be the same).

wiggy:
Probably a small scuff/smudge on the disc which the purple unit's laser is having a hard time reading because it's got less life in it.  The laser in the silver unit is likely in better working order.
Megatron:
Hmm...I have the purple gamecube and is the main one I use.  I tested my DD and it worked fine.  Is it Greatest Hits?  Not that it should matter but...
It also may be a rare combination of flaw on the lens/laser and flaw on the disc that just don't work well when used together, hence why they work on other things.

Interesting, maybe I could try swapping the laser parts (if they are fully compatible).

It is the bonus disk version - non greatest hits.
Perhaps I should try having the disks fixed before swapping parts.
