There's multiple ways to collect and I think each has their appeal.

One way is to get a lot of games, build complete libraries, and have many games from many systems all on display. You can really build a museum, even if it means getting games you don't fancy. When I go to a retro game store, I think it's really awesome to see games from all different eras. It's like you're going back in time, but to many different times, all combined in one collection. The downside is that it's more expensive and you have to get games that you might not like or play. You may feel like it's more like a job, getting special editions, collecting games in mint condition. Now some people think this is unpractical, to build complete collections and have more games than you can play. But there is some positive in this as well. It keeps you interested in your hobby, it helps you have goals, and it's fun to build libraries. Plus you'll always have games that you end up loving, games you didn't know were gonna interest you.

The other way to collect is buy less games, but games you anxiously want to play and have. Things are more simple, you'll have what you want for the most part, and you'll have more money left over to get more of the games that are favorites of yours. You will probably have less to worry
about as well. The downside is that you may never play that random, gem that you find when you collect and hunt all games. So things become more predictable compared to going out and looking for deals. Also, your wife is less likely to steal a game to test you. : ) Although that's still possible.

For me, it's kinda complicated. I collect MOSTLY for the games I really want. But at the same time, some games have nostalgic value. Some games I never had as a kid and I chase the experience I never had, but could have had. Then I collect a small amount of games whenever I get a system, since I feel slightly obligated to have some games for each system I own. I also love collecting certain genres more than others and sometimes I'll collect games just to add to a different category I'm lacking in. But all in all, I try to collect games I like and want.

Some people do it differently. Some rent games, some buy then resell, and some will just buy on PSN if they see a deal.

What's your way?

If the game is on a disk, I will aim for a complete version. Old cart based games, I will buy just the cart. I try to get genesis complete because I already have so many in original cases. New carts (3ds) I will only buy complete. I'm not a person that aims to get every game. My collection is one to be played and shared so I don't buy sealed in box. I believe once I get all the games I want I will focus on finding the manuals for them, the UGC or shadowfoxes boxes are good enough for me.

Even once I complete my list I will still look. I like talking to the people and never know when I might find a hidden treasure.

If i find a boxed old cart game for cheap I might buy it if it's not on this site though.

When I'm intentionally out looking to buy something, I will only get things that I'm actively interested in or something that fills a hole in a series.

But if it's a seriously good deal, quality goes out the window :P

Way back when i started collecting (more than 15 years ago) i was going for quantity over quality, and it was a good time to do it, everything was dirt cheap. Since i started back collecting retro (2 years ago), I'm mostly going for quality or games i really wanna play (and old turn-based RPG of any system or kind) except if i go to a goodwill (or the likes) and find games dirt cheap, I'm gonna buy them.

In the beginning of my collection, I grabbed everything I could, but I became dissatisfied with the amount of space my collection took up and after playing some junk (I used to have Batman Forever for SNES), quality over quantity became much more important in my eyes. I think it's neat to see a complete set if someone has enough space to display it, and know that any title out there that you might be curious about you can try on a whim and see what the appeal of a game might have been for player back in those days, but personally, I prefer collections with nothing but solid titles all around. If I'm looking for something to play I don't want to waste time sifting through filler (I do enough of that while game hunting). I like knowing that everything on the shelf is worth the space it takes up and spending time with. I'm more of a player than a collector (though I love the look of a well displayed collection; why I'm here pretty much), so I now avoid games that I have no intention of playing. With thousands of great games around, I only want to spend my limited time playing the very best.

I've always been a quality over quantity kind of guy. I'll only grab crappy games if they're either a) a source of nostalgia for me, b) a ridiculously great price, or c) I really, really want them for some reason. (no explanation for that third one, I just do sometimes)  ;D
To be this good it takes AGES!

I guess it depends on the system for me. Quantity for the NES, and mostly quality for the SNES and N64 collections.  But I assume once I have obtained the other 20 or so games that I am still looking for on the SNES and N64 I will too just try to get as many as I can.

I definitely fall into the "quality" category myself. I'm SUPER picky when it comes to the games that I play, and for some reason whenever I come across a game that sounds interesting it almost always turns out to be a title that received a small print-run, but that makes it more exciting when I find it so that's the trade-off.

I started out thinking I would get em all but quickly realized that would interfere with little things like car payments, college, insurance, etc. SO, I decided on quality stuff starting with my own personal Hall Of Fame which are the games i grew up with and have those cib. Then once those are completed I moved over to what's considered "the best" and then a few quirky hidden gems. I'm doing this with NES thru Gamecube and will prolly start with ps after that.
