Original XBox Disc Tray Won't Open
(1/2) > >>
TDIRunner:
My original XBox disc tray won't open.  When I hit the eject button, the light flashes and nothing happens.  If I unplug it and leave it for a while and plug it back in, it will open just fine.  I've done a few Google searches, but most of the fixes are either temporary or just suggestions to manually open the tray.  I would prefer to just replace whatever is not functioning correctly since I hate screwing around with tricks such as using a paper clip to pry the tray open.  Considering how cheap XBoxes are, I might just get another one, but I thought I would put this here to see if anyone knows of a cheap, PERMANENT, solution to this issue.

I'm not a big XBox fan.  But if I want to use it, I just want to be able to turn it on and use it. :P

I'd just get another one.  Soft Mod that one and stick coin ops on it.
TDIRunner:
Only paid $20 for it with all cables and a controller.  I hate to spend more for another one.  Although, I won't need cables or controlllers this time.

This is a really common problem with the original Xbox.  I have had several pass through my hands over the years (over 30 at least), and this has been on about 25% of them.  The only thing I have found to work is to open the system up, mess around with it and re-screw it - and even that doesn't always work.

This happens to my system from time to time. You can stick a paper clip in the little hole if you want and pull on it to get the tray out when it sticks again, but I don't like this method. Seems kind of shoddy imo. You can also get a new disc drive belt off ebay since they stiffen with age, but this is kind of complicated and it's probably just easier to get another xbox or use the method that I do on mine. When mine doesn't want to open, I press the eject button and while the eject button is flashing and it's trying to open I gently pull up on the disc tray from underneath (like you're trying to open a window that's a little jammed) and this works every time. It will usually work a few times without having to do this and then it might get stuck again in which case I just yank up on the disc tray again while it trays to open and it becomes unstuck.

It's not perfect, but of all the methods I read about it to 'fix' this issue this is my fave because it's simple, easy, and effective.
