So about a year ago I picked up a Sega Saturn model 1. Then just before Thanksgiving I found a Sega Saturn model 2 at a pretty good price at a CD Tradepost. I've played with both, and there are things I like about the aesthetics of both. One thing I do know is I definitely prefer the model 2 controller, regardless.

From your experience, is there an advantage to one over the other? Or is it really just about design and power/reset/open button preferences? And which do you prefer?

Not much of advantage as far as I can tell. I have a model 2 and a model 1 controller that has the C button in the wrong direction. Doesn't seem to be tampered with either so it may have come from the factory that way! Anyhow, I don't really prefer one over the other modelwise and I know there are slight tech differences (types of CD cable for one) but as far as I know they play the same.

One version is easier to install the old Racketboy mod chip into (not sure about the newer versions), and another version if easier to work with Rhea.  Not sure if they're the same.

If you're only planning on using legit factory pressed discs though, I have never heard of a difference between models other than aesthetics.

^^^ they're all super easy to mod with the newest chips :)

I recall the model 2 units being more reliable (someone please correct me if I'm wrong).

I think Wiggy's right. Otherwise I don't really see a need for them to make a model 2.

I thought the model 2 was made for people who had a fear of ovals......... :P
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."
