So, its been a bit of time since I posted. Tbh, just been overwhelmed with new career and life, I still have random pickups but I am really down to new releases or random heres and theres. That said, I am purchasing a house and will be closing in January. Its a new construction and finally I will have the space to truly display and enjoy my collection. Unlike the past year of living in an apartment and having 90% of my collection boxed away making me sad panda.

I will have a bedroom to dedicate to such and the sky is the limit on ideas and options. I am really wanting everyones ideas and feedback on what could work best. Currently I sit at around 2300 games, plus a plethora of collectors edition items, boxes etc. All disc based items are complete and all carts are in UGC or their original cases complete (DS, 3ds vita etc) I have 4 ikea display cases full to the teeth so possible expand there. So criteria I am looking at is below.

- Single Faced.... meaning don't want games behind games
- No wasted space, meaning I dont want mix match shelve sizes, or tons of space between games/shelves
- Height doesn't matter, floor to ceiling is an option
- Collectors edition items I can store in closet, really only concerned with games
- I like neat clean and organized
- Color doesn't matter
- Custom or bought doesn't matter

Honestly, just wanting something efficient, displays well and sturdy. If any have built their own custom shelves, please share the specs and measurements.

I thank you all in advance, I finally worked towards being able to do such and want to do it right.

Modular, modular, modular.  That's gonna be key to achieving what you're after.   EVERY shelf here is adjustable.  Sounds like you really need that sort of flexibility as well.

I agree with Wiggy that custom built shelving is the way to go.

However, if you decide that you don't want to go that route, this might be easier.  You still get what you're looking for, but of a lessor quality and probably a little more money.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I built my shelves very cheaply using materials from home depot. I was a carpenters assistant for 2 years but I can honestly tell you modern tools and internet how to vids make it cake for even the inexpeirienced. Also saw some nice brown colored stackable media shelves at best buy recently but they're sh*tboard so if thats a problem for you Id def go the custom route.

I literally built this yesterday, toke about $30 from lowes. Its not the prettiest, but its functional. It is strictly for dvd height size items, so i did 8" for the spacing and 1" off the ground and got 10 shelves in there.
I am going to build a few more on the other side of the support you see next to it. Come spring I am going to take it and my console rack I built and stain them so they look nicer.

@Gutling any chance you could scan that Fifa 96 on the genesis for me?

My SO is building me new shelves for Christmas/birthday. He is using pine for the main structure and masonite board for the backs. The shelves are being supported by cuts in the sides instead of hardware. They are fixed shelves but done at the correct spacing. Because we rent and may move in the future, they were made modular and will have wheels to roll out. Rolling out is better than packing up those jewel cases.

6 foot tall
20in wide
6- 8in shelves
2- 7in shelves

I'm probably going to build a few shelves this summer, I've looked and most premade media shelves kinda suck fro mow much they cost.

Just got a sweet new dado blade for building arcade sticks at work.  Gonna have to borrow it to make some new shelves for the games which have been displaced by the growing N64 collection :D

Some of these look great. I agree modular would be a preference. Thinking custom built will be the way to go, and while I am sure I can build them no problem they will for sure look amateurish which I guess is what I am afraid of. Main issue I have found with store bought shelves is durability, the shelves warp almost overnight.

These shelves are the first thing my SO has ever built with wood and they look pretty good. with enough wood puddy and paint no one will notice flaws.

only you, as the person who made them, will know and see every flaw.

that shelf look excellent. and I agree with Madrocsz commercial shelves are made of extremely low quality particle board and warp within a short time. i build my own shelves and the payoff is great: custom size to fit your exact specs and needs. plus its fun to build.

That might be the route I end up making, or if I can make friends with a savvy woodworker lol.

How thick would be the sweet spot for shelving and at what lengths might could someone suggest that wouldn't warp, these are areas I am more concerned with.
