That whole Amiibo craze...I'm sooooo glad i dodged that bullet! :)

They almost got me. I really wanted that Toon Link. Really wanted that damn thing. And I knew as soon as I buy that Amiibo, the floodgates will open and I will go into full collectors rage. But I really, really wanted that Toon Link :D So I clicked on it and it went into my shopping basket, as did Mega Man, Pit, Kirby, Samus and Yoshi, since Amiibos don't like to be alone.
But Toon Link was out of stock. In pretty much all the shops it was out of stock. So I looked on eBay, knowing that some Amiibos go for ridiculous prices. So, while I was browsing through the listings I discovered the Nendoroid Toon Link figure from Good Smile Company. I bought it and this figure is just awesome! So for now I'm good and I could evade Nintendo's grasp. But for how long... D

Someone please point me in the direction of a decent Kirby figure that's not a plushie, for I fear that might be my Achilles heel.

There is a 3D puzzle Kirby (I have this) and soon a Nendroid Kirby.

There is also a nice magnet figure but it is very rare and pricey.

@KaiserWAVE

IF Nintendo continues to integrate amiibo functionality into their games, then buying one amiibo at $13 may not be all that bad. You really have to take into consideration exactly what it unlocks in certain games.

Let me know when i can go into any store and buy any Amiibo I want for regular price, same as Skylanders or Infinity. Then, and only then will I buy Amiibos.

It's a cash cow.  If I have already paid for the game, and the data is on my disc, I don't see why I should have to fill my house with plastic toys and pay again to unlock stuff.  With sky landers/Disney infinity it's fine - people know that you have to collect the statues to play the games, but putting the functionality into other mainstream releases is akin to in app purchases, but on a larger scale.  Seems the game industry is finding more and more ways of making people part with their money, and it's working.

^This :)

The Amiibos have a decent lineup of figures that are not available as a collectable figurine from other companies. They're also very affordable (if you're fast enough and/or predorder) compared to other figures. There are two Samus zero Suit figures that look awesome but they are in the ~$100 range. So the upcoming Zero Suit Amiibo is very tempting. But I know myself and I know once I give into it I'll collect more of these things :)

As for their Wii U functionality, I think it's a nice gimmik but it has to go well with the game.

And the "I already paid for the game"-argument. Yeah, I don't like that either. But it seems to be common practice now with day one dlc and dlc that's already on the disc. I usually vote with my wallet and don't buy that stuff. But there are also times when I really want that stuff and swallow that bitter pill. That's part of the reason why I hope that Amiibo fever will not get to me :)

Just out of curiosity, how much have y'all spent on Amiibos? No judgement here. I've spent too much on games myself to be in any position to judge. Just curious how many figurines you have and how much you spent on the lot.

I have 60 amiibos. Every one released and a bunch of doubles.  With tax and shipping I averaged about $12.00 a piece, not counting the Mario Party bundle. Most of the doubles were on sale. I paid MSRP for the rest except pit which I bought from Game.UK for around $20 US.  I got very lucky on wave 1 and only bought Villager, Marth and Wii Fit trainer the first week they were available. The rest of Wave one I found on sale. I only waited in line for Gold Mario and the last round of preorders at Gamestop (which I was not able to get Robin, Lucina, or Charzard).

I used sales for most of them and the only one I paid over $14 for is Marth, because of shipping from MarioXB. So under $450.

All are US versions, minus Robin and Lucina (I have preorders from Playasia), and probably Jiggs and Greninja if I cant get them at launch.

I don't see them as pricey DLC, I see them as figures with nice little bonuses. Most of what they do is minimal but are nice little additions. Like the costumes in MK8 and items in Hyrule Warriors.

That's not so bad. Good that you didn't feed the scalpers.
