You only need to swap discs for "backups."

Action Replay Plus will play imports, with very few exceptions.

Honestly, it really is an underrated system. I got one for Christmas last year and love it! I just wish that some of the US games were less expensive.  ;D

That's why I tracked down a mod chip for mine. That's just not a collection I can afford to get into, lol.
i have a action replay but i also want to get it chipped so i dont have to deal with swaping the discs

What do you mean buy swaping the disc? Action Repay is not capable enough?

in order to play imports without a chip you need to let the disk read and pull it without breaking the laser and do the swap

Wait, what?  Chipping it will only allow to to play backups, that's it.  It won't allow you play imports (though patching JP ISO files to US is as simple as two or three mouse clicks...)

There are plenty of region free BIOS mods available to play original Saturn discs from any region.  They DONT generally allow you to play backups.  Not sure if youd need to install a mod chip AND a BIOS replacement to get it to do everything.

What kind of Action replay do you have? The swap trick doesn't even need one so the AR is seemingly doing noting for your Saturn.

This. I've never had a JP or EU region game not work after patching the region and the Saturn's region patcher is very user friendly.

You must have a bad Action Replay if you still need to swap discs for imports. I've played dozens of JP games on my US Saturn back before I got a JP Saturn, and now that I have a JP Saturn I've played tons of US games on it with the Action Replay Plus.

I did get a JP Saturn Model 1 because there are a few games that won't run on a Model 2, and there are a few JP games that won't run correctly or at all with Action Replay Plus - those games in my experience being Kyuutenkai Fantastic Pinball (won't run at all on a Model 2 regardless of region) and Real Bout Fatal Fury (also won't run at all on a Model 2, but even if you run it with AR+ on Model 1, there will be a few characters that glitch out heavily because the AR+ won't properly switch to 1M mode, so it seems to still need a proper 1M cart).

There's also KOF'95 and Ultraman: Hikari no Kyojin Densetsu - these games require their own unique RAM cart and won't run without them.

But yeah, aside from those instances (I know there's a lot more JP games that only run on Model 1 Saturns, but that's all I've encountered thus far) I've been able to play most games with my AR+ regardless of region.

So it should work Good? I bought an Action Replay for my US Saturn, but the games are still being shipped. I hope it works. If you need to replace your battery for the Saturn, will that affect the Action Replay in any way?

^^^ No, a dead battery just means you can't save.  The PAR should still function.

IKR?!  Like the easiest patcher I've ever, EVER seen :D

I don't know if it's been said, but an Interact Memory Card Plus RAM Cart will work also to play imports.

I'm a massive Saturn fan now...but back when it came out I remember being very underwhelmed with the system compared to the PS1.  Everything was about 3d graphics and cool cg cut scenes in my eyes.  The Saturn really didn't have much of this.  Not to mention the price tag.
Having re-discovered the system about 7 years ago I find that it has some killer pickup and play experiences. Also a lot of great unique exclusives.  But back when it came out it really was at a distant 3rd place.

I also only knew like one kid that had it and kinda felt bad that he made the choice to go with the Saturn.

Too bad the same cant be said about the Sega CD patcher. That thing is a pain in the ass if your windows is x64  >:( . Luckily I only needed to do it twice.

Bingo. It came out in a time when 3d was picking up. But now the 3d has aged and the 2d is what has aged better. Just got Parodius Deluxe, a Saturn import. Very nice shmup game.
