Do we have to worry about retro games going extint?

Einhander:

Is part of the reason why we like to collect because deep down we fear what happens if the games cease to exist one day?

If some of these retro games were even cheaper and produced in much more quantity, we might not be as anxious to get them, or am I wrong?

Part of me feels like certain games are must haves because of their rarity.

Is their any chance that some of these companies can ever start reproducing the exact old games again? I'm sure there is a niche market out there.

SegaNomadman:

Not really, I like to collect because the games are fun! Plus these games are preserved in the form of roms so there's no worry about "extinction".

monjici:

I buy old cart games mostly because of nostalgia, but also because I like this style of game (referring to side scrolling, etc).

But at the same time you may be right. I wouldn't rush to buy old "rare" game IF it would always have been in digital format or still in physical production. I guess that's human nature, like buying music albums of an artist you didn't care for years but since he died, you want to fill in that emptiness he leaves behind.

Also, being physical items, they use and break overtime, making them rarer everyday. You never know when is your last chance to get it!

romevi:

I buy because I have hoarding tendencies. I can just get some flashcarts and call it a day, but something about having them neatly displayed on a shelf scratches an itch for me.

I have to get rid of some stuff...  :-[

Jeff:

There are more modern games that'll go extinct before retro games, thanks to always online.
