I'll be the first to admit. I love games. I love collections, but sometimes I buy too much too fast, based on my funds. I'm not sure what it is, but sometimes there is this feeling inside of us that feels an impulse that they have to buy it now. And I have a big backlog of games I need to finish but sometimes it's easy to get in these modes where you can't stop. Not everyone has this problem. I wish I could just slow down sometimes and tell myself these games aren't going anywhere, be patient. But ever since me and my friend started collecting, it's so addicting. It's like if I see a game that looks cool, it feels like I'll never see it again or I'll forget about it if I don't purchase now.

I've done this before. Sometimes I see deals on craigslist that are hard to pass up. I feel like if I don't buy now at that price then I'll end up spending more later which can be true. I've never put myself into a situation where I can't pay for my necessities though and that's where I draw the line. It can be exciting to pick up new stuff and it is addictive in the sense that after an awesome score on games that feeling of exhilaration dies down and you look again for that same thrill of the hunt. Like anything else, as long as you have enough balance to know where your own boundaries are and don't put yourself into a bad situation financially then there's nothing wrong with game hunting or buying what you want. Be happy and take care of yourself and your family.

This.

For me, there is sometimes the fear that if I pass up a deal, I won't have that chance ever again.  I know a guy locally that found Snatcher for $150.  That's a hell of a deal, but still a lot of money for one game.  I was jealous at first, but later I was a little happy it wasn't me because I really don't want to spend $150 on one single game right now/  However, I'm not sure if I could live with myself if I passed up a deal like that.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

It's basically an addiction.

It started from rebuying stuff I had stolen in a burglary, then regetting stuff I had as a kid, then the stuff I missed out on as a kid.  Coupled with my interest in tech and gadgets I had to get the latest gen too.

Somewhere along the line, it turned into needing to complete series of games.   Add to that, drunk online purchases, browsing when bored, and buying up lots.  Once you get to almost 3500 games in, it seems impossible to stop! Lol

Honestly, I think it really depends on what kind of a gamer you are.
If you don't really play video games but you do enough to call yourself a gamer, I think you're far more likely NOT to just see a game and buy it. You'd more like have an interest in a specific genre.
Although, more to answer your question, I think it's to fill up your shelves so you can be considered a big gamer or something. Just the pride of it.
Also, you might know how XBOX 360/One and the PlayStation Network do a sort of achievement thing. Maybe to have a lot of the points is sort of a goal.
This seems like an interesting topic. I want to see how this goes.

Hmm good points about pride. I never thought of that. Sometimes my friend will get deals to fill his collection and text me every time he gets something real cheap. He doesn't play most of his games, just kind of starts them. For me, I do seem to have a habit and make genre lists too. But I do game everyday so even though I'm not gaming 10 hours, I still game a couple hours usually. Or at least most days, I have other hobbies too, but love to game, but also love to own certain games. But I would never buy a game if I don't really like it, the only few ones are the ones that have that nostalgic feel, but those are far and few. Then there is the Next gen systems. Sometimes you feel addicted to the hype of a new game with new graphics. But there is also the aspect of gamer fans and elitists who are always trying to outpace everyone, and sometimes that can internally make you feel you need more.

Nope it adds up really fast when you start spending $400 or $500 on one thing. Sealed games are freaking expensive. Especially when you start buying cases of them. And I've gotten addicted to buying custom consoles lately.

I'm hoping by next year to finally have a proper display room for all my stuff gonna be wall to wall billy bookcases for the game room to display all the games controllers and consoles.
