How important is it to u to keep up with modern games?

I have a friend that says his friend told him his PS3 is a dinosaur and he said it made him feel really negative about his collection. I do have a PS4, but at times I feel like not keeping up too hard with upcoming stuff since I still have so much stuff to play for all the several of systems I own. Sometimes it can get a little bit overwhelming seeing PS4 commercials all the time. You feel like you got to check it out while it's fresh. I do like to keep up with new technology, but I don't want it to be a necessity. I'm still perfectly happy with PS1, PS2, Genesis, NES, SNES, etc.. I mean in a way I do want to play a little bit of the new stuff. I can't miss Uncharted 4, Far Cry 4, etc... But at the same time, I find myself disappointed with a lot of new stuff and the more I play it, the more I tend to feel I'm wasting money, and I go back to older systems a lot.

Do you ever stick to last gen and previous, and enjoy it, but still feel like you're missing out or behind? I'm not sure what it is, but there's something about getting something new that makes you think you're gonna be satisfied with your experience.

I still haven't made the jump to the Xbox One yet, but unless it's a new Halo, Gears of War, Doom, or Grand Theft Auto I don't care about having it the moment it comes out. I'm interested in the Master Chief Collection, but I'm not ready to upgrade to an Xbone yet just for one game. Besides that, it still sounds like Microsoft has quite a few issues to work out with the Xbone so I'm in no rush. I'll let them continue to patch out all the bugs before I spend $400 on the new system.

Another reason I've put the new gen Xbox on hold is because I recently bought a Wii U for my son's bday. We can finally start playing it next week after his party. He doesn't know about it so he's in for a surprise :). In the meantime, I've been picking up games for that system (most of which I'll give him for Christmas), but it's not as big of a deal to me to pay the higher price for those new games because I've noticed that 1st party Nintendo games tend to hold their value more, so unless I find them on craigslist or in a garage sale a few years from now then they probably won't get much cheaper. I'm sure all of the new gen Xbox games that interest me will be dirt cheap in 5 years though I doubt I'd be able to hold out that long to start playing them.

I really did enjoy the Wii U during the brief time I demoed it at the store. For games, so far we have Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, LoZ Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart, Nintendo Land, Super Mario 3D World, and New Super Mario U + Super Luigi U. I also have my eye on Rayman Legends, Sonic Lost World, and Game and Wario.

My son's old DS and games were stolen last month when my car was broken into by some shithead. I'd eventually like to get him a new 3DS (the new one currently available in Japan) as he was pretty bummed when I told him his DS had been taken. So yeah, I have been interested in the newer gen Nintendo stuff that will hold its value more, and while I am looking forward to some newer Xbox games, it's harder to justify spending the money right now since the longer I wait, the cheaper the games will be and more early launch console problems will be addressed.

The new Nintendo games look great to me too. The system might not be as powerful as PC or PS4/X1, but Mario and crew look awesome and the games are a nice contrast to the usual shooters I enjoy.

They say "Numbers don't lie" as far as the whole power comparison but let me tell you, playing Hyrule Warriors the system feels every bit as powerful as playing Dynasty Warriors 8 Complete Edition on my buddy's PS4.  Playing Bayonetta 2 feels as powerful as any game I've ever played, and honestly far more beautiful than any other I've ever seen (yes I'm aware art direction != system power, but obviously they're at least tangentially related).  So again I think this may get into the realm of "unable to tell with the human eye", much like RGB vs YPbPr when you're talking about video connections.

As to the original question... it's not important, at all.  Typically my NES gets more play than anything, even though I have somewhere around 25-30 different systems, 2nd through 8th gen.  These last couple weeks I've been giving the WiiU a huge amount of love, but that's definitely the exception rather than the rule.  Your buddy claiming the PS3 is a "dinosaur" is just an idiot, imo.  Not that I really consider "dinosaur" an insult, but it's clear he's trying to use it as such.

Arseen:

Fastest growing part of my collection still is NES/SNES.

Got few WiiU games, no PS4 or XBO.
