I have a friend that says his friend told him his PS3 is a dinosaur and he said it made him feel really negative about his collection. I do have a PS4, but at times I feel like not keeping up too hard with upcoming stuff since I still have so much stuff to play for all the several of systems I own. Sometimes it can get a little bit overwhelming seeing PS4 commercials all the time. You feel like you got to check it out while it's fresh. I do like to keep up with new technology, but I don't want it to be a necessity. I'm still perfectly happy with PS1, PS2, Genesis, NES, SNES, etc.. I mean in a way I do want to play a little bit of the new stuff. I can't miss Uncharted 4, Far Cry 4, etc... But at the same time, I find myself disappointed with a lot of new stuff and the more I play it, the more I tend to feel I'm wasting money, and I go back to older systems a lot.

Do you ever stick to last gen and previous, and enjoy it, but still feel like you're missing out or behind? I'm not sure what it is, but there's something about getting something new that makes you think you're gonna be satisfied with your experience.

I still haven't made the jump to the Xbox One yet, but unless it's a new Halo, Gears of War, Doom, or Grand Theft Auto I don't care about having it the moment it comes out. I'm interested in the Master Chief Collection, but I'm not ready to upgrade to an Xbone yet just for one game. Besides that, it still sounds like Microsoft has quite a few issues to work out with the Xbone so I'm in no rush. I'll let them continue to patch out all the bugs before I spend $400 on the new system.

Another reason I've put the new gen Xbox on hold is because I recently bought a Wii U for my son's bday. We can finally start playing it next week after his party. He doesn't know about it so he's in for a surprise :). In the meantime, I've been picking up games for that system (most of which I'll give him for Christmas), but it's not as big of a deal to me to pay the higher price for those new games because I've noticed that 1st party Nintendo games tend to hold their value more, so unless I find them on craigslist or in a garage sale a few years from now then they probably won't get much cheaper. I'm sure all of the new gen Xbox games that interest me will be dirt cheap in 5 years though I doubt I'd be able to hold out that long to start playing them.

I really did enjoy the Wii U during the brief time I demoed it at the store. For games, so far we have Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, Hyrule Warriors, LoZ Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart, Nintendo Land, Super Mario 3D World, and New Super Mario U + Super Luigi U. I also have my eye on Rayman Legends, Sonic Lost World, and Game and Wario.

My son's old DS and games were stolen last month when my car was broken into by some shithead. I'd eventually like to get him a new 3DS (the new one currently available in Japan) as he was pretty bummed when I told him his DS had been taken. So yeah, I have been interested in the newer gen Nintendo stuff that will hold its value more, and while I am looking forward to some newer Xbox games, it's harder to justify spending the money right now since the longer I wait, the cheaper the games will be and more early launch console problems will be addressed.

The new Nintendo games look great to me too. The system might not be as powerful as PC or PS4/X1, but Mario and crew look awesome and the games are a nice contrast to the usual shooters I enjoy.

They say "Numbers don't lie" as far as the whole power comparison but let me tell you, playing Hyrule Warriors the system feels every bit as powerful as playing Dynasty Warriors 8 Complete Edition on my buddy's PS4.  Playing Bayonetta 2 feels as powerful as any game I've ever played, and honestly far more beautiful than any other I've ever seen (yes I'm aware art direction != system power, but obviously they're at least tangentially related).  So again I think this may get into the realm of "unable to tell with the human eye", much like RGB vs YPbPr when you're talking about video connections.

As to the original question... it's not important, at all.  Typically my NES gets more play than anything, even though I have somewhere around 25-30 different systems, 2nd through 8th gen.  These last couple weeks I've been giving the WiiU a huge amount of love, but that's definitely the exception rather than the rule.  Your buddy claiming the PS3 is a "dinosaur" is just an idiot, imo.  Not that I really consider "dinosaur" an insult, but it's clear he's trying to use it as such.

Fastest growing part of my collection still is NES/SNES.

Got few WiiU games, no PS4 or XBO.

I think it's because of the lack of 'bit' shift now. The jump of 8 to 16 was massive, likewise 16 to 32 etc. But nowadays I'm not sure. I'm a pc gamer now so please excuse my ignorance but is there a substantial difference between last gen and now? I've read somewhere that some games are still not rendered in 1080p. We have a wii u because the missus is a massive Mario fan but why is there such a lack of games? I picked up my first ps3 last week and that was only because it was going dirt cheap in a charity shop. Just discovered bayonetta though through all this talk about the sequel so gonna grab that today.

Ive never been interested in keeping up with technology. I was one of the last ones in my grade to get a cell phone (junior year in 08) and even after all these years I still have the same one and have never upgraded even though Verizon gave me a free iPhone 5 something it just sits in a box in my house. My point is why update something to something that is only marginally better at performing the same function. If you put a PS3 and a PS4 game side by side I hardly see the difference aside from some lighting effects.

Not yet if ever.
True that shit is bit shinier now...

but why is there such a lack of games?

Games take longer to make and are more expensive to do, thus makers stick to sure fire shit.
Nintendo takes some risks, but they tend to be bit to the wrong direction.
Hyrule warriors is exception.
They took small risk by combing too genres in attempt of juvination, and watching videos I think they succeeded.

If a person told me that my collection was a dinosaur, I would laugh in their face.  I wouldn't feel the slightest bit negative about my collection.  In fact I would feel better about myself since I knew I wasn't as ignorant as the other person.

With that said, I have no problem with the current generation systems.  But I'm in no rush to buy any of it.  Our collections are proof that these games aren't going to disappear.  They will be around for us to purchase later.  And the prices aren’t going to skyrocket for a while.  Prices will slowly go down for several years until the system gets old enough to hit collector status and then prices may start to creep back up.  By then, I will have bought all of the games for that generation that I want.

So no, I don’t feel that I’m falling behind.  I’m perfectly comfortable where I’m at.

Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I've always kept up with the current generations of consoles until now.  I simply have no interest in buying an XBO and will not buy a PS4 until there are games worth buying (which doesn't seem to be for a while IMO).  Over the past year I have replenished my NES/SNES/N64/ps1/DC collection (God bless Craigslist and ebay) and I am thrilled.  I cannot believe I ever sold these; what a dumb kid I was!   I would much rather replay the games I used to love as a kid than play most modern stuff.  I do have a Wii U however.  And of course, TCP now gives me the tools to make awesome covers for all these games.  When my friends see the covers their reply is always..."that's awesome, i love those games."  You just don't get that feeling for the new systems (at least I don't).

I own plenty of games that I haven't even touched yet, and there are a ton of games that I want for the systems I currently own. I don't see a reason to buy the newest thing yet. With my gaming habits, I estimate that I have ~3 years worth of games to go through without needing to buy anything new. I might buy a new computer in that time, but not a console.

I buy everything! Lol.  Actually, I don't have an xbone....yet.  So far nothing has grabbed me as a reason to buy it.  I have about 16 games for the ps4 so far, a number of them still in wrappers.

I love cart based systems.  There is just something about the whole plugging it in and switching on, and having the game instantly playable.  No patches, no firmware updates, no ridiculously long intros. Just play immediately.  I don't get the same feeling from a disc and like most here, I hate digital distribution.

I'm currently going for a full eu & us sega master system set, and I just love seeing them all lined up on the shelf.  I get as much enjoyment from having them, as I do playing them.

It's only as important as you think it is. Personally, I tend to shop last gen. I collect far more than I play at this point, so there's virtually no reason to buy stuff right when it comes out unless I really want to play it right now (which is super rare).

For me is basically this
