Whenever I see new graphics for a next gen console, there is always that whoah momemnt that kind of sucks me in. But in the end I always go back to the older stuff. I feel that todays games try to look more real, but I can't use my imagination with them as much. When I look at Genesis or even PS1, the stuff looks more artistic and creative. I can't explain why exactly. I like the look of the older graphics. Looks more historical. And at the end of the day a video game is still a video game. I have to be honest. I am disappointed with the graphics and frame rates with PS4. Looks out of date already. With PS1, the graphics just seem ageless. Because the games allow me to use my imagination.

Are you perhaps artistic in other aspects of life?

I'm the same way as you.  These modern graphics are nice and all, but there's nothing left to the imagination.  I've always found that artistic people tend to gravitate towards things that spark and engage their imaginations, so it's really no wonder that most would find themselves leaning towards a more classic graphical feel than what we typically find in modern games.

Of course, I'm sure nostalgia plays a role in it too.  I know I grew up with the hyper colorized sprites on systems like NES and Genesis and the blocky polygons of PSOne, so there's always a nice twang of familiarity and comfort whenever I play those systems again.

One of the great things about limitations is that they spawn creativity out of necessity. I've long heard that Miyamoto imposes limitations/restrictions on his team (and occasionally 3rd parties which Nintendo have worked with) in order to force people to come up with unique solutions to problems.  With the capabilities of the last couple of console generations, artists are pretty much free to do damn near whatever they want, which in itself can stifle the creative process.

i can pick up and play just about any 8bit -16 bit era game anytime and still enjoy it. some of the more current gen games ill never play again. it seems  like the others said,  the old games just sparked the imagination better and in alot of cases conveyed a story better  in my opinion .

For me personally, it seems like in the past, every console generation was a major step up from the graphics of the previous generation.  But for whatever, reason, that seems to have stopped with the current generation.  Don't get me wrong, I understand that the current systems are more powerful than their predecessors, but I simply don't see that much of a difference in the gameplay.  It's sort of like comparing 4K UHD to HD.  Sure it looks better, but it isn't the huge change we were all blown away by when we switched from SD to HD.  You get to the point where you can only improve so much and the eye can only see so much.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I'm not sure if I'm ''artistic'' in other aspects. But I do love nature, I do like paintings and old buildings. Sure, nostalgia plays a role, but I've also found myself playing PS1 games I never played before, and enjoying them. When I play PS4 for a while, there is an adjustment period where I have to look at my CRT for about 5 minutes to get used to the older graphics, but once I get passed that, I'm fine. I appreciate them. The music was much more unique in older games. For instance NBA Hangtime on N64 vs NBA 2k15, where they just use modern, mainstream, commercialized music. I feel that the older games were more geared towards gamers and now it's more for the mainstream and each game is starting to feel almost the exact same. There is nothing left to the imagination. Just looks like you're playing real life graphics, except they are much more downgraded compared to real life, and if anything I'm disappointed in the graphics more so now, because today's games almost require great graphics and framerates in order to carry them and make them stand out. The more realistic the graphics get, the harder it is for the game play that can match it. So even though it's starting to look more real, it doesn't feel more real. One example? Drive Club. I have that game and have almost no fun with it, but that's just me. It seems like it's even funner to just drive outside in real life.

I agree with you when it comes to older graphics. They have a unique charm to them that is hard to explain. I too tend to gravitate towards older games even with all these new gen hype. Games just aren't make like they use to make them

I like how modern games look, but I never got the hype for realism. I like it when modern games have some kind of surrealistic style like Mirror's Edge does. I also like fantasy games like Dark Souls where the environments are something I couldn't go outside and see for myself.

Old games have their own kind of charm, but I recently played Sonic 4 ep. 2 and was blown away with how good some parts look. It looks better than how I imagined the originals looked as a kid. But like most everyone here, I agree gameplay is more important than graphics and I tend to enjoy playing sprite based games more than 3D ones.

I never liked "modern" graphics. Games are supposed to be something you play to escape the real world. Which is kind of hard to do if everything looks real.

I personally have no issue with either modern graphics OR 8/16-bit graphics, but there's a hole for me in the middle - the PS1/N64 era, specifically the 3D games.

The 3D just wasn't good enough for what they wanted to do with it. Not that the games aren't still fun, but graphics from that era are in a weird gray zone - not 16-bit charming or modern polished.

I was just about to say exactly this. I love the artistic nature of the 8-bit/16-bit games where cartoon games looked as good as the TV equivalents. Although the PS1 and Saturn looked amazing at the time, early polygon games look like like shit now. And despite it being one of my favourite consoles, many N64 games look terrible with ridiculous fogging and blurring and terrible frame rates. AAA titles look awesome on it though.

Contra on NES looks a million times better than it does on ps1.

Having said that, Rayman is arguably one of the most gorgeous games ever made, and I love Astal too.

I know what you mean.  Of all the generations, the PS1/N64 generation's graphics seemed to have aged the worse.  With that said, there are still a ton of great games from that time.

It's all a matter of perspective because I love PS1 graphics. What others find old and block, I find retro and artistic. Games like Einhander still look good. When I look at PS1, I tell myself, this was where it all started. Now games like Tomb Raider look bad to me because I can't see it well, but not all games are as bad for me.

Looking back at it I think it is probably just the games they tried to remake that are the bad ones. I recently played sensible soccer on ps1 for the first time and couldn't believe how they made one of the best football games ever into complete garbage. I think a lack of understanding of 3D didn't help. Some games on ps1 are near unplayable because of clipping, bad camera angles etc.

I'm still a massive fan of ridge racer 1, and think it's held up so well to this day. On the flip side I picked up ntsc-j wipeout on Saturn at the Play Expo... Why did the devs murder that port so badly? The graphics are awful.
