I am always flattered when these conversations come up. To make someone even consider going away from retail covers in favor of my vertical style is humbling. :)

Lol, well here is the deal. I think that in most cases the vertical ones are improved. It's just that sometimes it's natural to want to have the exact old one back. Now, for the N64 ones, I tend to want to use the retail ones. Maybe it's because I don't favor the red labels. But for the SNES, I love how they're vertical and have the SNES logo on the sides. So I think I'm going to go all vertical with SNES, maybe just use the retail ones for Donkey Kong.

I don't favor the red labels.

Then use the Black PAL ones...
Any cover that is in Red format can be easily switched to Black (or JAP Purple) or wise versa.

I have the same problem deciding what to do with my N64 collection. I like the retail better because its more nostalgic but the quality is all over the place (beast wars is crazy blurred when printed) so I think the best way to go is with vertical just for the sake of quality.

I prefer the verticals because it gives my cased SNES collection a more uniformed look.  Also I like making the vertical covers, shenske's vertical template is one I use because it is so awesome.

Vote goes for vertical, too. And because artwork tends to vary in quality, I tend to do my own so that nothing comes out blurry. If it does, I have only me to blame.

I started using Photoshop only a few months ago and thought at the time that all templates were created equal. Not true.
While everyone here has done a tremendously wonderful job in helping thousands of people organize their collection and have given them avenues to make their own custom covers, shenske and wiggy have made my overall favorite templates. They are very clean and organized, and leave room for many options.

Though I don't have any SNES games, I already started making my own for future purchases because I can make covers for NTSC games all the while using the SFC logo, which I much prefer.

I went with vertical for SNES except for Donkey Kong Country. For N64, I went with retail, except for Episode 1 Racer

Did you use the retail as they are on the site or did you fix them as you went along? Some of them are really washed out and blurry.

If it came horizontal originally I use horizontal. But if it came vertical I use ANY vertical custom or retail.
To be this good it takes AGES!
