I've noticed that some released games have been re-made with different translations or some were hacked and seem to be entirely different games. Castelvania and Zelda seem to have a half million different versions. Anyone know about these?

There are translaions, hacks and homebrew.

Translations are basically the same game as the original, just in english.  Some minor changes might be made.

Hacks are modifications to existing games.  The Castlevania and Zelda games are hacks - someone basically creates a new game based on the existing data.  Modifying levels, enemies, story, etc.

Homebrews are new or unique games based on a game engine from another title, or just built from the ground up.  Somebody making an NES version of The Hunger Games would be a homebrew.

Sorry for the random hijacking but this is somewhat relevant. For games that were originally in Japan, would them being reproduced for PAL consoles make gameplay different i.e. slower etc because of the difference in 50/60hz?

Yep the normal -17% speed and borders stuff applioes, so:

NTSC ones made up and just import a console?

This.

Hmm that's interesting, I own a PAL repro of Earthbound and I don't think it runs slower... I'll have to check it out and be a bit more observant. How does a retron 5 run these babies?

Legend of Zelda: Parallel Worlds (the Redone version 1.1) is amazing hack of Legend Zelda: a Link to the Past.
Super Metroid Redesign is complete hack that is slightly harder than original, Super Metroid Impossible... Name says it all.
Super Mario World Return to Dinosaur Island is short but good hack.
Super Mario World 2+ and Super Mario World 2+2 are excelent hacks of Yoshi's Island (latter I'm still searching)..

Are there any really good Super Metroid hacks? I also saw that there are new fan translations for Final Fantasy 4 & 6. Anyone know about these?

 ;)

There are few others which are probably good.
Eris and Super Zero Missions at least.

Impossible is just impossible. Redesign is miserably difficult in a few spots as well.

Zero Mission gets a thumbs-up from me. I've heard decent things about Eris, but haven't tried it.

So, to further our discussion from the other day.

I played some Earthbound on my PAL repro and went to youtube for some Onett soundtrack goodness. When you say the game plays 17 percent slower, I assume the music is supposed to be effected too?

The songs ran at the same speed.
