Does anyone know which versions of Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior are better? FF Anthology for PS1 has FF 5 and so does GBA and there is also a fan made repro. DW 3, 5 & 6 is available as a SNES repro and also on DS. Could someone tell me which versions are better? Also is there a way to play GBA and DS on a TV?

In regards to repro in general, they sometimes offer a "better" translation than the released games.  Fan translations usually include more language specific phrases and meanings that are lost in trnaslation with some games.  A classic blunder being "All your base are belong to us".  This is a result of a "direct" or literal translation as opposed to a context translation.  Lots of NES games are famous for these bad translations.

As for FFV, the PS1 port is pretty lousy in my opinion.  It has really long load times and the translation isn't very good.  The GBA version of FFv Advance is great, with a much better translation.  I am not sure how the repro cart holds up, but it has to be better than the PS1 version.

To play GBA games on your TV you need either a Gameboy Advance player for the Gamecube, or a Retron 5.  Both will play any gameboy/gbc/gba title with no problem.  Not sure about DS.  There IS a way to hook it up to a computer, but I don't know about TV.

The ones i want were originally only released in Jp/Eur and they had a different Hz rating (i guess thats how you say it). Do they look like the original or are they tweeked for US systems?

By Hz it sounds like you mean Pal vs NTSC.  Japan and the US use the same basic TV standard of NTSC, so imports will play fine, both games run at 60 hz.  PAL is mostly Europe and Australia.

FFV also has an android\IOS port, but I'm not thrilled with the graphics in there.  Looks like someone made the game with MS Paint and RPG maker.

So are you looking for professionally made repros, or do you know someone who is just going to patch it with an English rom?  Reason i ask, is that if you buy from a US Repro site, every one I have seen offer carts that will play in the US.  If you are in Europe or a Pal region, I believe there are pal repros as well.  You just need to make sure that you get a cart for your region.  It doesn't matter where the game was originally released, so long as the repro cart is tailored to your region.

In terms of how the ingame graphics look, I guess that will depend on the game.  Although I have several repros (along with the original foreign game) and have never noticed a difference.

Yeah i would need ntsc. Professionally made preferably since i know no one that can make them. Do you know anyone here that can or has any to sell?

I will be home a little later tonight, when I get there I will PM you some of the repro sites I use.  They're pretty popular with TCP members.  Can't post them in he forums, tho.

I'd start with collecting the games that can't be gotten on any recent platforms. DQ 5 and 6 was recently released on DS. If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, I'd be going for Treasure Hunter G for sure.

In fact, if they're not listed, see if they can make these anyway:

Live a Live
Treasure of the Rudras
Dragon Quest 1 and 2

I have all the games you listed except FFV.  Secret of Mana 2 is awesome, and I recommend it.

As for the DQ games, if you're really big into playing them on the SNES, then go for it.  They play great.  However, I have not played the DS versions of the games, so I don't know which is better.  Personally I like playing RPGs on a TV rather than a handheld, especially DQ 3 which is on GBC (yuck).

Sorry for the random hijacking but this is somewhat relevant. For games that were originally in Japan, would them being reproduced for PAL consoles make gameplay different i.e. slower etc because of the difference in 50/60hz?

I live in Pal land, so I was wondering whether its better to get PAL repros made up, or get the much cheaper NTSC ones made up and just import a console? Since the original games were NTSC.

I've noticed that some released games have been re-made with different translations or some were hacked and seem to be entirely different games. Castelvania and Zelda seem to have a half million different versions. Anyone know about these?
