Hey everyone, sorry for the shameless plug here but a buddy and I are starting a YouTube channel called Video Game Book Club, and we were hoping to start building our fan base before the release of our first official episode.

Here's a rundown of how the show is planned to run:
We will both play a game simultaneously (we live about 2 hours apart) and get together afterwards to discuss the game, similar to how an actual book club works. Things we plan to talk about include an overall summary of the game including history and origin, as well as why we decided to play that particular game. Some games we choose will be ones that both of us have played before, only one of us has played, or neither of us have played. We will span the systems and not focus on one particular company. Also part of the discussion will be how the game presents itself to players, including graphics and music along with some other aspects. Gameplay will also be a big part of the discussion and how well the main story plays out and the overall cohesiveness of the game. Finally we will end with a summary of the game with our own personal thoughts on how things within the game worked, or maybe what we didn't like or would have liked to have seen handled differently.

We aren't looking to be a "Let's Play" or "Game Chasing" channel since there are plenty of those out there. We are looking at being a more interactive channel and getting people to follow along and play the game with us while we are playing, then join along in the discussion by submitting their thoughts or asking us questions.

Right now we are in the middle of filming/editing our first episode which will cover Earthbound on the SNES.

If anyone has any interest, please, follow us on our social channels and keep in touch. Also, if you think you know anyone that may be interested, please share this with them. We aren't trying to go on YouTube and become millionaires or even make money at all. All we want to do is have a good time playing retro games and talking about them with fans and other gamers out there. We both have full time jobs and this is just something we started for fun, and if only 1 person finds enjoyment out of it, we will be fine with it.

Thanks everyone! Please like/share/follow us at the links below. It would be greatly appreciated! Again, there isn't much content aside from our Tumblr at the moment, but follow us to stay up to date  ;D

Thanks man! Any input is welcome :)

We are looking in to getting some mics, as audio is a pain to listen to if it's bad. We are actually shopping around to find a good deal on some to use in the first episode after filming the trailer and just having to deal with what we recorded.

We have our general outline written out and are in planning mode, so it will be soon!!!

SO! Since we are too poor to afford production quality lavaliere mics, I found a great tutorial on the ol' interwebs to turn a pair of hands-free earbuds in to a lavaliere mic. I bought a couple pair and tried em out tonight. Worked perfectly!

Fear not Internet. Our videos will NOT make your ears bleed ... only the trailer on the landing page :-/ sorry.

If you are looking for a good capture card, the Elgato Game Capture HD works fantastically with systems old and new.
I started using it for my Let's Play channel, Power Plaid Plays.

A few tips:
MUSIC!!! Adding background music to the talking parts can make a long and boring speech part more engaging. I find it makes a huge difference with my Let's Plays and other video projects.
Also balance the audio, don't go from quiet speaking to loud music. What editing software do you use?

The camera was flickering a bit as well. Though the lighting was good.

Also a pet peeve in your trailer, the passing off of every other sentence between 2 people, IDK why but this always annoys me. It always seems very unnatural. The guy with the beard speaks in a bit of a hammy cartoony voice. I did the same in early sessions of PPP, but I eventually dropped it after some practice. I suggest just making some random let's plays for practice speaking less stiff and more naturally to nothing, unless you are filmed in front of a live studio audience  :D .
I for some reason think it might help if you two were sitting instead of standing. And maybe not holding a game case that you tapped every sentence.
also framing wise, Have your heads more centered, and try to show only the waist up when just talking, puts the focus more on the speaker. Watch some clips of the CUPodcast Pat the NES Punk does for a good setup.

I like hte idea, and I would like to see episode one when you have more of a final video other than the simple test.

Thanks for the constructive criticism rather than just telling me we sucked ;D

Since this is our first time really trying anything like this, we will take whatever input we can get to make it, at the very least, a decent show to watch.

The "Pilot" video, where I continually tap the case :-[, is more or less just me trying out the editing software. Which, at the moment is just iMovie as I sift through Adobe's options, and even take a look at Final Cut Pro. Also, the gameplay footage that is on that video is not how we will normally show it. Daniel (the guy with beard) has some way of capturing his game play, not sure if it's the same capture card you mentioned or not, either way though it looks much better than what the "Pilot" episode shows haha.

With the camera, I'm afraid we won't be able to control that as we are using the camera of a cell phone to record, so I'm assuming that the flickering is it attempting to autofocus. Which unfortunately is an option we can't turn off. Maybe one day we'll be able to afford a decent (real) camera :P -- This is more than likely where the issues with the audio comes from as well. I can separate the audio from the video and attempt to control it, but being that far from the phone's mic doesn't help us. Luckily, after some testing last night using the cheapo DIY lavaliere mics, controlling the audio and matching it with any other music will be much easier and not as much of a shock when it switches.

With the speaking in the "Trailer" video, I'm thinking (hoping) since that was more of a scripted thing to make sure we said the right info, the actual episodes should flow a bit more naturally as we won't be attempting to remember lines. Instead we'll have a general outline to keep us on track while speaking freely and naturally (while editing out all the "ums" I'm sure to throw in ;)) We will also probably be sitting in the actual episodes once we find a good position to film it from, so hopefully that will fix some of the framing issues :)

Thanks again for all the feedback! We really do appreciate it. I think by the end of the night my wife could have spoken the entire intro word for word haha. Hopefully we can take care of a lot of this and you can enjoy the first episode soon :)

(I just read through this again, holy crap I used a lot of smiley faces - my bad)

For my videos I use:
Elgato Game capture HD - $150
2 Omnidirectional mics from RadioShack -About $25 each (Better for close range, they are less than a foot away from us when w use them)
Audacity for audio editing (Free)
Adobe Premiere CS3 - Video Editing
Adobe Photoshop/ Flash CS3 - Art and image editing
Cannon HD camera - $150

The camera I have is great! The film below was shot with it, No extra mics. It picks up audio very well and shoots very good quality video for the price. Battery life sucks a bit though. I'll give the name when I get home.

BTW, most of these scenes took a ton of takes, From flubbing and forgetting lines to forgetting to replace props (I forgot to reset the 2nt Keyboard a few times), we want to re-shoot the internal scenes. I was tired and was too deadpan and Matt did not know what to do with his hands.

Your first episode or session will never be your best. You will learn over time. Our first 3 sessions were mostly crap awkward stiff talking, In one episode I flat out started to read a manual.

Awesome man, thanks for the tips and equipment prices/suggestions!

I attempted another test video while sitting down and using the new mics. Little bit more playing around with audio correction and I may be able to get it there. I'm a web designer/developer full time, but never really get to mess around with video, or actual graphic design (Illustrator, etc...) so this is actually pretty fun.

We'll need to play with framing when we get back together, as I know that really isn't the greatest place to put the footage :) I just wanted to put it in there haha.

I've got another question I would like to throw out to everyone.

Should a channel be more than one thing?

Meaning, as Video Game Book Club, we have a clear idea of what we want the main idea of the show to be. We know what we want to focus the channel on. Do you see it as "bad" if we throw in the occasional game chasing, pick up or a let's play video to go along with these? These would all be edited as well, and not just look like something we slapped together in 5 mins. In a sense, we would be filling in the time between episodes with decent content so subscribers wouldn't get bored.

We will put time in to editing these so there will be some production value, and we won't let them overtake the channel. But for content purposes, what are anyone's thoughts on this? We're not going to try to compete with people like The Game Chasers or popular Let's Players who already have a following and can do it way better than we can, just content for content sake.

Something like repro review would be nice, I mean something that would list and tell short talöe of interesting repro games you have found.

But anything interesting and well organized game related is fine by me.

Very interesting idea. Thanks for the input!

I was just curious because it would be a few weeks between actual episodes of what we are focused on, so I didn't want viewers getting bored with us, but also don't want to make it seem like we're a channel that's not entirely sure of what they want to be. If that makes sense.

Okay, I demand you stop stealing my ideas from thin air!  :P

I was having a thought to do a podcast like this, based off of HVGN's "Is it really that bad?" series of videos, particularly the Hexen 64 one. It's a super interesting way to dive into a game and dissect it's parts, then continue to iterate on differences of experience. There's a lot of other benefits too, but I'm sure you have a specific sense of what you're trying to accomplish with this.

I'd totally be willing to help out in whatever way I can. It's an idea that I totally can wrap my head around, and would love to see it take off.
