Would it have something to do with the screen? If so, I would think US and Japan would work, but PAL might be a problem. I don't know. ???

Nah. The pal/secam/ntsc differences are only in TV signals - won't carry over to external devices. Nintendo have always liked to have region locked peripherals. Eg: Super famicom controllers won't work unmodified on an eu super nes.

If I was to get a Japanese one, is there any Japanese symbols?or is everything on the controller itself still in English? I don't want it to look different than my Mario, Luigi, and Peach controllers

Its all the same. The only Japanese text you'll see is on the packaging :)
