N64 plug-in color swap

Ok, so I have a Nintendo 64 controller that's in really good shape except for the cord. Has anyone figured out how to get the colored cover of the plug-in without destroying it?

I've tried looking it up, searched many forums, but they either say it's impossible, or break stuff.

I tried it before.. it's not pretty   My best advice, don't mess with it, or when you swap, paint it...

The N64 connector doesn't really come apart without doing damage to it. I have one that is in bad shape. Only recommendation is to get an extension cable of the same color and solder that in place of the old cable.
