So as I mentioned last week, Game Stop will stop carrying PSP games starting September 1st.  I’ve noticed that most of their PSP prices are actually pretty cheap which makes sense since they will basically only be carrying these games until they are gone.  So despite the fact that I hadn’t been in a Game Stop in many years, I’ve been stopping by just about any one I can find to see what they have.

Earlier this week I found a copy of Metal Gear Ac!d for $4.  Not bad.  I bought it and when I got home, I discovered that they gave me Metal Gear Ac!d 2, which I already have.  The next day I called and told them what happened.  They said that it must have been labeled wrong because they didn’t have a copy of the first game.  They said they would check a few other stores and told me to call them back in 20 minutes.  While I was waiting, I was near another store, so I stopped in to see if maybe they had the game.  I told them what happened and the guy working there told me that stores cannot transfer games and if the other store didn’t have it, then I was out of luck.  I asked him if I could just return the game to his store since I was already there and I had the game with my receipt.  He said no, because it would screw up their inventory.  Then he asked me why I didn’t just download it digitally.  I told him I don’t buy digital games and he looked at me like I was an idiot.  He said that I was going to have a hard time getting games in the future…..??? , whatever that means.

So anyway, I left the store unhappy.  I was planning on writing a short story here saying how I would never go to Game Stop again.  But before I had a chance to do that, I went ahead and called the first store back.  They guy said he found the game and was having it sent over to his store.  He will swap me out on Wednesday.  He went on and on about how sorry he was and how embarrassed he was that they mixed up the games.

So the point of this long story is that while many of us will probably agree that Game Stop isn’t our favorite gaming store, it’s worth mentioning that there are some good workers out there and if you give them a chance, they will treat you right.  While I will probably never go back to the second store, I will continue to shop at the first store just because of the way the worker went out of his way to make me a happy customer.

Sorry, that was longer than I planned.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

I went into a game stop, and the person behind the counter tried to talk to me.  I hate that.  Most of the time it's like this:

Counter dude: "Oh yes, this is a great game"
Voice in my head: "I may get around to playing 5 mins of it in a year or four.  Right now, it's shelf decoration"
Voice outside of my head: "Yea I heard"

Counter dude: "Oh and this one is also a great game too"
Voice in my head: "I figured that by the $3.99 price tag.  Stop saying games are good if you don't even know what a turbo duo is"
Voice outside of my head: "yep"

Counter dude: "I play this one online alot"
Voice in my head: "What?  You just rambled on about every first person shooter, but you didn't say shit when you put Ys for PSP in the bag?!"
Voice outside my head: "Mmm hmm"

Counter dude: "Oh now this game, it's the best ever.  My clan and I..."
Voice in my head: "Here's $5, please shut up"
Voice outside my head: "yea, FPS sure are fun.  And so original."

Counter dude: "Ever play this one? You in any clans?"
Voice in my head: "I will fucking stab you."
Voice outside my head: "I will fucking stab you."

My local Gamestop recieves nothing but praise from me, the people there are awesome. Give me free old cases, help me whenever I need info. They even let me swap generic cases for originals if they have them. It just all depends on the people behind the counter. If they are true hobbyists they will go out of the way for you. If its just a 9-5 job, your sol lol.

Gamestops are hit or miss...I go to 1 where I actually like the employees.  Of course they'll be doing their jobs and ask about preorders and such, but a simple no thank you is all that is needed for them to drop it.  I don't know them by name nor do they really know mine, but they recognize me when I go in.  Other gamestops in my area though...have a whole different atmosphere when I go in...one that I feel the employees are just there for a paycheck and nothing else.

While I do believe most of the "horror" stories of gamestops from other people on the internet, I also believe that a lot of them are either made up or exaggerated since a lot of video game sites/forums have a "it's cool to hate gamestop" stigma.

I had an issue with the inventory return to another store thing too. It makes sense if you think about it. My local store has been good to me. Its been through 3 managers and 2 assistant managers that have all been good to me because I take the time to do their little surveys. I have put 5 $1 transactions on pre orders to help their store have better a survey outcome for the week.

In return I have had them save games for me without asking and not put them out to shelves until after seeing if i would like them. They save anything Batman for my son. He got a Pop vinyl figurine and posters from them.

If I walk in and say to them "Has anybody claimed that poster/standee/promo material?" they save it for me if possible.

Its kind of like the whole treat others how you would like to be treated.

I should mention that I also tend to over do it when trying to be friends with people.

They got a few PS1 RPGs, Microwave, and I made a controller stand themed after MGS for one of them.

In retail it's all about the management.  Much like directors and movies ;)

I goto 2 Gamestops, 1 where my friend works and is the Manager and the 2nd is like a 5 min walk from my house. Whenever I need a case for a game I got elsewhere I ask my buddy if he has one if I can grab it and its always yes, like I bought pokemon plat from another GS and they had no case, my buddy game thru with one that was complete. I was super happy! When I got generic DS Cases with GBA Slot he let me ransack his shelf for all OEM Nintendo Cases. I try to give all my business to his store since hes my friend but if im in a rush and they dont have it the one by m y house always comes through. They did w/ D3 UEE for PS4 on saturday when no one else had it in stock!

The employees at my local eb games (gamestops canadian stores) are pretty great. Everyone at the store is always nice and willing to help you with anything. However, I went into a gamestop in Miami and bought 3 games when they where having a special but 2 get the third free. Well my third game ended up being so scratched it didn't work and the employee even knew that plus his customer service was more lousy than a cows patty of crap. So really it just depends on the employees...or maybe most gamestops do suck?

As a follow up, I went in one today and asked about them discontinuing carrying PSP stuff. He said Sept 1 is their official date, and let me give him my number.  He said he will call when he gets a email from corporate on what their sale/discount will be. He said sometimes its buy 1 get 1, or 75%, but he wouldn't know till they told him.
I thought that was pretty awesome he would do that.

I'm going to ask about the same thing when I go to pickup my replacement game today.

I work part time at Gamestop and I haven't heard anything yet about discounts on PSP games.  IIRC with PS2 we started out at buy 2 get 2 free, then 50% off, and now the current 75% off.  So, if you're looking for huge deals it may be a while.

So I just recently got a whole bunch of ds/psp/wii games from EB Games, which is game stop in Australia. Anyway I just took back a whole bunch I didn't want, I ordered multiple copies to make sure I got complete games.

Anyway the guy who refunded me stuffed up and ended up giving me an extra $80 dollars because he read the receipt incorrectly. I'm tossing up whether or not to let them know, or just treating myself to some new games.

What would you guys do?

Its a hard decision, they might take that out of his paycheck, some stores do that.  :-\
