First and foremost let me say I LOVE THIS SITE! I searched and searched and finding this site was like finding the promised land!!!

My question about the NES scans is this:

Why do they all seem to have a Photoshoped box on the spline with the words Nintendo Entertainment System on them? This is obviously not part of the original cover and I'm wondering what's the purpose of this? I am a purist and would prefer the original retail scan untouched and was hoping there is a way to download it without this.

The purpose was to make the covers look uniform when they're all lined up on the shelf. Think PS2 or Gamecube where there's the consoles logo on the spine.

If you prefer the cover without the logo on the spine your best bet is to gather the covers you want and then make a post in the request forum for the logos to be removed for you.

Or just remove them yourself.... It's a five minutes work....
