Actually, Maybe a Wii.
You have access to all Wii and Gamecube games. Getting around Virtual console, The Kirby Collection, Mario All-Stars, and Zelda GameCube collections, Sonic Mega Collections, Mega Man Collections, And the NES games in Animal Crossing are all on disc.
Also this is a thing:

Uses a Gamecube's or Wii's Memory Card Slot and Disc Drive. Not quite as good as a GB Player, but close enough.

I'd probably go 60GB PS3 with hardware emulation for PS2 - unfortunately the PS1 emulation is software so it wouldn't count.

Close second would be the SNES.  It's top games are the best IMO but the sheer volume of good stuff for PS3 and PS2 just kills it.

If I only had to keep one console with emulation allowed I'd go Wii because it plays GC games, and can be easily hacked to play NES, SNES, Genesis, TG16, GB, GBA, GBC, etc.

It would be the SNES for me, I am old enough and had my fair share of moments with the NES but the SNES is the 1st system I was able to buy games for with my own money, and I definitely spent the most time on that system to earn my "gaming thumbs" as my gf would call them lol

C'mon all the RPG's on the SNES as well as mario, yoshi, metroid and so many other fantastic games. you can't go wrong here.

With all the RPGs on PS1 and PS2. I think I'd pick PS2.

Fair warning, that thing is a piece of crap. ;)

It only works with GBA games, and even then, doesn't work with a lot of them.  There's sound issues galore.  Also, it doesn't work with the Wii (natively, at least.  I suppose there might be some kind of hack that allows it to work though.)

I think it used to, but a update disabled unlicensed NGC games.

PS1+PS2 is the single largest category in my collection, so I guess I'd have to pick that for volume AND variety. Xbox 360 would be a close second, especially if the original Xbox virtualization counts.

In this one-console only nightmare scenario, are we allowed to continue getting games for the system we chose, or are we stuck not just with one system, but with that system AND the games we currently have?

I would say you can continue to purchase games.  I didn't want people to answer based only on the size of their game collections.  I wanted to know which system was everyone's favorite.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me "sir" without adding, "you're making a scene."

Favorite is a relative term, also I think some people may have based their answer on size of library.  I chose the Xbox 360 because it was one of my favorites, but also because of the extensive library of disk based and downloadable games/content.  If going away for a weekend and could only bring one system, my choice may change to the Sega Genesis for PS1, depending on the length of time I am restricted...
I know I am thinking WAY too much into this, but certain parameters go in to these types of decisions.  lol

No, no.  I meant that I didn't want people to pick based on THEIR OWN library of games.  In other words, don't pick a system just because you have more games for it (unless you want to ;D).  Picking a system because the system offers a large game libarary that you could continue to purchase is a perfectly good reason to choose it.

I still stand by the SNES, but a fully backwards compatible PS3 would be difficult to pass up.

That's why I like this site.  I can ask a question like the one I did and people actualy put a lot of thought into their answers.  Most other sites would just offer a bitch fest of people trying to prove why XBox is better than Playstation (or the other way around).  I'll pass on that conversation. 8)

My first instinct would have been to say nes or snes, but since with a ds lite I can play a ton of remade nes/snes games along with a huge amazing gba library ALONG with so many great ds titles that would most likely have to be the system for me.

DS Lite 100%! and that battery life woot woot!

Think about it:
Zelda nes gba
FF6 gba
Link to the past gba
3 Castlevanias on gba
2 first castlevanias on gba
Mario gba and ds
golden sun 1&2 gba
red/green pokemon remakes gba
silver/gold remakes
metroid fusion and zero mission gba
yoshis island from snes on gba
mario bros 3 on gba
super mario world gba
zelda minish cap gba
quite a few mario and luigi rpg type games
handful of advance wars games
mario 64 remake on ds

Its a dead giveaway that I didnt quite think of in the very beginning. Of course quite a few amazing n64 titles and snes rpg/adventure games are missing but I think the gba and ds library alone would make of for it.

Am I sounding mad by saying my 3DO??

Only got it a couple of years ago and probably use it more than the rest, all in all.

Best version of Need for Speed.
Best version of Road Rash.
Best version of SSF2.
Decent exclusives like Killing time, Monster Manor etc

Just annoyed that my FZ-10 wont play Way of the Warrior so am on the hunt for an FZ-1

...  freak.  Props for actually picking a system most others don't though.

But I don't think it's got the best SSF2 any longer. There was a dreamcast release, and the new HD release not too long ago.
