I have an original fat PS3 which has given me various over heating problems these past few years.  I've repaired it twice now, but I think it's time to replace it with a newer model.  I don't want to buy a used one.  I'll probably bite the bullet and buy one soon, but I'm wondering if there will be a price drop in the near future.  Is anyone aware of any potential price drops?  How much longer does Sony plan to support the PS3 and keep it in production?

Well, I can't vouch for a price drop, but I would guess either holidays or whenever PS4 gets one.
In regards to support, Sony stated at E3 that they will continue to support the PS3 for a little while at least, since we have at least 2 more years of games scheduled.  Also, the PS2 only stopped a little while ago.  The PS4 doesn't have the fanbase or support yet to carry the company.  And since the Playstation division is one of the few things keeping Sony alive, I have to think they will support it for a while.

If you don't mind me asking, why the aversion to buying used?

I sort of expected that as far as support goes.  I believe the PS2 had a game released as much as 5 years after the PS3 was out.  And the PS4 is off to a slow start not unlike the PS3 (although for different reasons in my opinion).  So I think the support will be there.

However, I still think the prices are too high.  $200 is the cheapest model you can find right now, but that is with a 12 gig HD and no games.  To me, that should go for about $150.  I guess I can wait until the holidays and see what they go for the day after Thanksgiving.  My wife loves to shop that day, and maybe she can pick one up for me.

I've never bought a system that was currently in production used.  Also, I have trouble trusting these newer systems.  If I found a good deal, and I was sure it was in perfect working order, I would probably get it anway, but right now, I plan to buy a new one.

I don't blame you, as I only buy new systems for the current gen as well.  But I have also never had a system die on me while it was still active.  The only reason I ask is that I see the used systems going for cheaper than they typically do.  Gamestop has had some sales as well as local retailers.  My guess is that with the PS4 and Xbox One out now, more people are trading last gen stuff in, so there is an abundance of stock, hence lower prices.

Also, I didn't even realize that I hit the hero mark.  Thanks for pointing it out.

Out of the 25 gaming systems I own (half of which were bought new) the only two to fail on me were the PS2 and PS3.  It's frustrating because my 2600, which is almost as old as I am, works just fine and it spent 15 years stored in a garage in a box without a lid........ :-[  I know that it's apples and oranges to compare the old cartridge based systems to the current disc based systems, but regardless, they just don't make them like they used to.

Unfortunately, I don't see the used system prices going down like you do.  For whatever reason, they are still pretty strong here.

Now that I think about it, I also have a Jaguar with a blown chip, but it was that way when I got it and it was most likely caused by someone who used the wrong power supply.

Well, it depends on what you expect to pay.  Gamestop has 160GB models for about $200, and they come with 5 games.  Older games, but it's not the worst deal.

This is a local gamestore of mine, but I'm pretty sure they ship free to the US with larger orders.

They have a 250 gb used for $175

Truth be told you're probably not going to find too much lower than that for the high gig models.  At least not yet.

I guess that's sort of the point for this thread.  If I knew when the next price drop was going to be, it would be easier to make a decision on a used model.  But Sony probably doesn't want anyone to know when they will drop the price next.........

Touche.   ;)

Well obviously nothing has been announced, but looking at Sony's release schedule, I'd think your first real opportunity would come in September when the While PS4 Destiny bundle comes out.  If not then, I would look for the black friday/holiday stuff.  Because there doesn't seem to be any major releases between now and then that would warrant a huge sale or discount.

I wouldn't really expect another price drop of the PS3 until Black Friday. At this point I think that Sony wants to encourage sales of the PS4 as much as possible, and a price drop of the PS3 isn't going to help that.

If I found that deal, I would probably jump on it, but those are few and far between.

I can completely understand your aversion to used non cartridge systems.

I refuse to buy a used PS3, 360 or Wii and anything newer. Usually you save $50, Maybe a little more. That extra $50 is money well spent for peace of mind and a full warranty.
