What are some of the best Rom Hacks you've played out there?

Like FFV translated into english, the Earthbound Uncut from what I gather is Mother 2 Translated in English but kept to original standards without NOA's childish edits etc.

Chrono Trigger better localization than the translated version we got etc.

I found a Super Metroid hack called Zero Mission but its insanely hard, and I took a wrong turn and got stuck and now every door I go through kills me lol so now its not as polished as I Was hoping.

So now i'd like to play some more, can you guys recommend some?

Not what you're thinking but Control Freak for Super Metroid is excellent. Super-customizable controls for the regular Super Metroid game.

Mario Adventure is a hack I always recommend. It's Mario 3 but entirely new levels and a lot of new things added, like random seasons for one.

Then there's Zelda's Birthday, a hack of Oot. It has one brand new dungeon, and two old ones but with items switched around. Kind of like what Master Quest did, but the non dungeon parts of the game are different this time. I REALLY liked what they did with the third dungeon.

Where are you guys finding these hacks, and what are you playing them on?

MOD EDIT (no naming of rom sites) has ips files that you can apply to your own roms, so I'm pretty sure it's not against the rules for me to post that link.

There are other places you can find pre-patched roms, but that's definitely a no-no.

Emulation is the easiest way to play them.  You can also load a lot of them on various Everdrives if you want to play on legit hardware (not all, some use tricks of the emulators which don't exist in real hardware, another reason why emulation isn't quite perfect, but a large number).  Some of the more popular ones are made into real dedicated carts by repro makers and can be found on various websites including ebay (which I wouldn't recommend, for the most part the prices on ebay are more expensive than the ones on repro maker sites -- again, some exceptions, I know certain people who own sites also list on ebay, but as a rulee)

I normally just use my computer for hacks. But it's also handy to have an emulation machine like a homebrew enabled wii, or an ouya.

Also, I forgot that Kid Chameleon hacks are a thing now. I haven't tried enough to recommend any specific one.

And lastly, SMWcentral. Probably the biggest rom hacking site. It's for hacks of Super Mario World, and a lot of progress has been made in altering that game.

One I can recommend is Super Mario Star Road. It's Super Mario 64 with new levels. The same guy also made a two-player hack of the original game.

Zelda Outlands (Nes), Zelda parallel worlds remodel (Snes), and the BS Zelda hacks that make it playable are all great.

Not sure if I should mention Lunar Magic, a SMW editor.  Or the fact that so many other games (Castlevania, Zelda, Metroid) all have editors. Some are tough to use due to rom\system limitations.

no you guys are on the right track, hacks for roms that are good is something i'd wanna play but i'd like to play them on the original hardware. so i have the sd2snes so hacks just for emu's i'd like to stay away from.

Not many hacks use tricks supported only by emulators, it would be (bad) demos.  If you make a demo that won't work on real hardware, it's generally considered a failed demo.  Sort of like tool-assisted speed runs, if they cant be played back on real hardware, then they're not really legit speed runs.

Yeah, only one I'm aware of that doesn't play on flashcarts are the SM64 hacks unfortunately.  In theory it might be a failure of the Everdrive, but I don't know.

I think N64 hacks are built to work with specific emulator plugins and settings. They'll probably stay that way until N64 repo carts are a thing.

You think that's bad, try Super Metroid Redesign.  Man is that game HARD.

One of the better rom hacks I've played is Super Mario Land Return to Dinosaur Land. Very difficult but it s more of the same as Super Mario World, which is far from being a bad thing

Go for Super Metroid Impossible.

We even have US vertical and label for it.
