The Atari 2600 is a system that younger collectors/ retro gamers do not show much interest in, most know of it, with ET being the most well known game on it, but NES tends to be the farthest back younger people go, unless they are hardcore, or find one cheep at a tag sale. (Judging by me being in high school and knowing what my retro-gaming friends are into)
I doubt prices will go up on average games, but the land fill carts might be worth extra due to them being part of the ET legend.

I see there's a lot of room for fuckery on this.

Good lord, let's hope not. If these horribly damaged E.T. carts are worth a lot of money, I can see a similar situation to that created by the Pawn Stars NES-001 debacle where people think their worthless video games are worth hundreds. People will be trying to sell their disastrous-looking cartridges for full price.

It's not just the younger collectors. Most collectors don't really bother with pre-3rd generation stuff. I played Atari consoles back in the early 80's, but I have absolutely zero desire to collect that stuff. Just hasn't aged as well IMO. The games, while novel at the time, are just too primitive and lost all of their appeal once games like Zelda, SMB, etc. became available.

One advantage of an Atari game though, if you want a quick game (2-5 mins), you can play and be done with Atari before other systems start up.  Never mind the fact you can only save most of them on special spots, making casual play\playing while busy a pain in the butt.

Lack of a pause button on the actual 2600 sucks though.  I work from home, so sometimes I'll be on a conference call and can play a game, only to have someone say something that requires me to speak up, and stop playing my game.
