Windows 7 is by far the better of the 2 in my opinion. It's as close to xp as your going to get.

It's compatible with almost all programs you would want to run.

It's really sad that they are stopping support for xp.

I went from win 7 to win 8.1 not too long ago...and while 7 was much easier to use and as mentioned, much more like xp, I'd suggest that too.

I personally like win 8.1 a bit more now that I've gotten used to it and I don't feel like going back to 7 anytime soon.

Also, if you decide on skipping 7 and going to 8 make sure it's win 8.1 and not win 8.

If you're keeping your pc, get windows 7 for sure. If you're buying a new pc, windows 8.1 isn't a bad choice. The biggest compatibility problems people have are with hardware. The only software problems I've had is that fraps can't record desktops, and some indie games made with game maker crash. A few old educational games I try to install for laughs refuse to work, but work in virtualbox, and all dos games work with dosbox.

People preach gloom and doom about windows 8, but download classic shell. It brings back the start menu, it's a must have. And the new metro elements are easy to ignore. Get windows 7 if you're really worried about change, but windows 8 will be supported longer.

Can I be nosey and ask why you hate it? I know it's not perfect, but it bothers me when people just say "it's bad."

I'll tell you why I detest windows 8. And I goes along with the xbox.

The interfaces suck. I want to start my computer to a regular desktop and I honestly miss the blades style menu on the Xbox.

Every time I start either system I feel like alls I'm looking at is a bunch of adds and it just looks and feels like a clusterfuck.

I know that you can start windows 8 to a kinda normal looking desktop. BUT when you click start, it just pops up that same crap that I'm trying to avoid.

I am so with you on this one. I absolutely despise the metro interface and can't stand the tile based system. I grew up on old school windows operating systems and just wish that they could have just updated windows 7 cause it was nearly perfect.

Windows 8 is getting a patch that makes it act a bit more like 7 next Tuesday, April 8th. It does seem to be a tad more efficient in running things in my experience.

I still like 7 though, since they're not shoehorning in what people asked for - it just works.

Classic Shell fixes everything about the metro screen, literally bringing the start menu back when you click start in full functionality and fully customizable. It's shitty that it isn't there from the start, but neither is steam, photoshop, firefox, your desktop background, or anything else. Go ahead and favor windows 7, whatever, but hating windows 8 because of an optional feature is silly in my opinion.

Windows 8 runs just fine, it really does have fewer glitches and issues. However, the user interface is just so ungodly terrible that it overshadows how well it runs.

I had to go on youtube to figure out how to turn my Windows 8 computer off.

I'm not the smartest person in the world but the UI should be more intuitive.

You can make Windows 8 boot to desktop - you never have to see the tiles if you don't want to. I know I never see them - I don't like them, but I like Windows 8 overall. It has quite a few small enhancements over 7 in the area most of us care about - the desktop. Those improvements aren't enough to make a user of 7 upgrade to 8, but if you're taking the leap from XP, I'd suggest going all the way to 8.

Besides, as has been mentioned before, the update coming next week makes it even easier to avoid the parts people complain about, so really there's no better time.

The patches (8.1 and the new one coming out soon) fix pretty much all the complaints people had about Windows 8 when it first launched.

When it first came out, I was one hundred percent behind the people saying 'stick with 7'. It really has improved a lot since then, so don't be too put off by peoples horror stories of its first few months.

I think coming from XP going to win8 has a larger learning curve.  When I went from XP to 7 it just flowed and seemed like a natural upgrade and an easy transition.  Meanwhile, going from 7 to 8, it took me a while to learn the OS and get used to it and also took a bit more to find the drivers for some of my hardware.

I think that for playing the game, Win 7 might be the quickest and easiest way to go.  No real learning curve, smooth transition and great support and reliability.
