Did all of you with bigger hard drives upgrade yourself? If you did, what guides did you use? If not, who did? I don't wanna fux the XBOX so I'm trying to find a place that will do it for me... Not very experienced with modding stuff.

Doom, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm going to buy an additional xbox in case someting goes wrong installing a new bigger hdd. I suggest you do the same.

  • ...and that's the bottom line
A friend of mine modded my Xbox. He did all the soldering "implanting" the mod chip since I don't know how to do that. I watched him doing it and he was done in no more than 10min. Granted he knew what to do but he's no electrician or something. He read about it, tried it, and it worked right from the start. He was the one who talked me through installing the new HDD. It's really nothing more than loosing a few screws, unplug the old HDD, plug in the new one, install a new dashboard (optional but it's a lot more comfortable, I have the Evo X software) and put it all back together. I don't know if I could retrace my steps and do it again on my own but it was really simple with him just pointing at things and telling me what to do :) There's plenty of FAQs and guides as to how to install a new HDD. I'd say read a few of them and I'm sure you'll be able to do it.

I dunno, XBOX is like a (low powered in most areas) PC that plugs into a TV, so by that logic change the HD shouldn't be that hard. I've rad a few guides and you need to back up the original HD to the new one for things to work (logically) which seems like a huge pain in the ass, but I'm most squeamish about actually opening it up and replacing it. Backup can be done over FTP which I'm a pro at thanks to Snowcone!

If I bite the bullet and actually do it I'll definitely record the whole thing.

I've found a few guides. Haven't used any of them, but I'm for sure gonna upgrade my hard drive before summer vacation is over in late August.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MX6yk6MgGU - (part one) REALLY annoying background music. It's quiet most of the time though.
http://www.xboxhackz.com/tutorials/hardware/hdd/newhddinevox.htm A text guide, not video. Uses EvoX.
http://www.xboxhackz.com/tutorials/hardware/hdd/exthdd.htm - External HDD bay guide
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu_moia-oVI - Another case of loud music...

Yet another guide. Besides the awesomeness of having all games on the HDD, now I'm considering a HDD upgrade less and less.
I can just run a NAS (Network attached storage) and the files will be accessible from all over the network, including from XBMC. I have a few spare hard drives and PCs (thinking about making a thread to show off your computers) and if I fux a 15 year old PC, no biggie.
-----
I got another XBOX game, DDR Ultramix 3, with the Konami mat, for $2 at a yard sale today. Only problem - IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK! I have a curse with XBOX games I think. Out of the games I have now:
SWAT
DDR Ultramix 3
DooM3
Project Gotham Racing 2
Splinter Cell
The following DON'T PLAY or only play now and then:
SWAT
DDR Ultramix 3
Project Gotham Racing 2
Splinter Cell

Gonna buy some DVD-Rs, start up BitTorrent, download the games that I bought, and burn them and play the backups so I don't have to worry about scratching up my games even more.
Does anybody have the Burger King games? They work on 360 and XBOX and they're dirt cheap too.

Yeah, but that does not mean they are fun and engaging. After playing them for a while, they get boring fast.

Take the games that do not work to a GameCrazy, Hollywood Video, or Hastings and get the disc resurfaced for $2. It is cheaper than getting some DVD-Rs and the disc will look brand new again. I have an extra xbox Konami Dance Mat that I do not use, let me know if you want to buy it from me  :) .

1. I know, but I read Big Bumpin was good enough. I have a knack for getting enjoyment out of shitty games and if I find any of them for 1-3 dollars I'll consider it.
2. Nearest GC: 18 miles away. Nearest HV: hell if I know. Maybe built into the GC 18 miles away. Nearest Hastings: I don't even know if there is a Hastings in Ohio.
3. Already have a third party thin mat (Pelican), and I'm borrowing a thicker, much better one from a friend. Don't think I'll need a fourth one. However, may I ask you a question? How does the XB mat connect to the box? I'm guessing there's something that's supposed to go in-between the XBOX and the mat, but I didn't get anything like that.
