Take the RetroN 5 for example, it'll do pretty much everything I'll want it to do for only $100. Plays the original carts, uses the original controllers, and is a simple plug-and-play system. But it maximizes the output of graphics that are already there and makes them presentable on an HDTV.
I was recently looking into emulating PS1 and PS2 games. The hardware required to run them in HD would cost about $700, fuck that noise. Not to mention I wouldn't know what the hell I'm doing.

Im with you on this one. If you want to get the best experience possible I would play these games on original hardware with the original graphics, just the way it was meant to be. I can imagine playing games for the N64 with an updated video signal but it just wouldn't be the same.

Maybe I'm alone here, but for all the trouble to get that N64 to run HDMI which actually make the games look like shit, I'd much rather just buy an s-video cable and play them on standard def tvs. The games will actually look a lot better that way, no lag or other BS, and it would cost at most $10.

this is exactly what I do

Whilst I agree with the "just grab a CRT" crowd (I have a dual PVM setup myself), you guys need to look at it from a long term perspective. CRTs are dying and they're not being manufactured anymore, so alternatives will be required sooner rather than later. Additionally, some people just don't have the space for them which is certainly a valid concern.

An N64 emulator would probably be the way to go as far as convenience and resolution
