OK, you computer guru's.....

I had to buy a new laptop, it has Vista on it and so far, I am not a happy camper.....

Is there any way to run plain 'ole windows messenger?   ???
MS says no   >:( , got to use Windows Live Messenger    ::)  ....
I am not interested in the additional features with 'Live' and definately not interested in the ads or the i'm 'contribution' feature.

The option I am currently considering is wiping the HD and installing WinXP. (I happen to like XP)  :)

On a game related note, I have to be able to run all the battlefield games on the OS.

Rather than wiping the hard drive you could just install XP as a secondary operating system, that way you could use either Vista OR XP whenever you wanted.

You can also use TRILLIAN. It's compatible with MSN and Yahoo with no adds.

Being the nerd and asshole I am, I want to recommend a Linux based operating system, but I doubt the battlefield games would run on it. But Vista sucks. At the very least get XP on there. But for MSN, there's plenty of free chat clients. Hell, some you don't even have to download:

Best option? Make sure you have your recovery CD in case you ever want to go back to Vista. Then wipe it and install XP. Before doing so, make sure you can find XP drivers for everything in that machine. Then reinstall everything and most definitely get Pidgin like Doom said.

My new laptop has Vista and I quite like it. My home machine is running XP though.
