From what iv heard the Sony Trinitron Models:  kv xxFS100, xxFS120 or xxFV300 (the xx are the size of the tv)

Are good choices and will work with light guns.

Don't quote me on that its just what iv heard from other gamers.

I have a 50" 1080p Panasonic plasma thats about 6 years old and a 42" Hitachi plasma thats about 8-9 years old. The 50 makes everything look terrible and the 42 is much richer in color and smaller so obviously not as stretched. I have a monster s-video that I'm switching out for SNES, N64 and Gamecube (much cheaper than component) that seems to improve picture quality substantially over RCA. My question is should I stick with the old plasma or try to find a good LCD? As it stands now my sound is running through an AV receiver so everything sounds great I just need to tweak the picture. Thanks

Depends on what you mean by old. If you're talking games from the 80s up to early 2000 or so, then go full RGB and get yourself a SONY PVM, or Preferable a BVM. Know anyone in broadcast or the medical industry?

My brother found a free 32" panasonic CRT beast. I wouldn't put up with anything bigger, it's really hard to move. It has 1 component (interlaced), 2 s-video, 4 composite (with 1 being front access) and 1 composite and audio output. And the nes zapper works with it.

Someone near me is selling these two tvs, would light gun games work on either/both?

Sony KV-XA34M31 34'' CRT

Sony WEGA KV-XJ29M31 29'' CRT

If they're tube tVs and they have a slight curve to them, then yes. If they're completely flat then you might have some issues.

It has nothing to do with it being flat or curved. It all about the refresh rate as Wiggy has already mentioned.

Your best bet IMO would be just ask if you can test your NES on it before you buy it.

Didn't know it was due to the refresh rate. In any case, I think most of the flat screen CRTs you see were made towards the tail end of standard definition when they changed refresh rates, so using that as a gauge might not be a bad idea.

Regardless, always test these things out when possible and ask how many hours were put into them.

I have a 32 inch Sony WEGA and it's awesome for my old school games. Make sure though you get new cables for your systems, s-video (which you already have) or component if you can, that will make a huge difference.
My friends parents had a 42 inch Sony back in the day, tube style, and it would have been perfect but that thing weighed a TON.

^^^ JESUS!  I've got a 36" WEGA and it weighs 250lbs.  Can't even imagine a 42"  :o

Sony WEGA KV-XJ29M31 29'' CRT

Don't quote me on this, but I believe that NO Sony "KV", "KD", or any with "XBR" in the model number TV will get along with a light gun.  For sure any that are in the "Super Fine Pitch" or "High Scan" category won't.

Don't worry wiggy, I won't quote you!  ;)

I have a Sony KV27FS120, and it's amazing! Interlaced Component, Composite, S-Video inputs, Flat Display, what more could you ask for? Light gun friendly, I've used an NES Zapper, SNES Super Scope, SNES Justifier, and a Mad Catz Dreamcast Light Gun, they all work great!

Google up specs on whatever TV you're looking at, and check if it's 480i or lower. If it is, then your chances look pretty good, I would still ask to test Duck Hunt on it.

Ah, so I was (mostly) correct.  That model falls outside of the "super fine pitch" and "high scan" categories. Good to know that some from the line work ;)

Unfortunately the tvs are 5 hours drive from me, and I'd be getting a friend to pick it up on his way down to visit, so there's no chance to test.

I think I'm just going to have to gamble on it, and if it doesn't end up working, I'll have a giant $20 piece of trash. :)

I got myself a Finlux from a friend for free. It was a pain in the ass to haul that thing into my flat but it was worth it, all the games look much better and more vibrant than on my flatscreen.

Well good luck!  You'll have some serious paper weights otherwise lol

Rockin' a PVM 20L5 and a rotated 14L5. Couldn't be happier with them.
