I was given a new PSP 3000 for xmas and am trying to connect it to a TV for gaming purposes.  I bought a used composite cable from the local game store and I have tried every configuration to connect the PSP to both an HDTV and then to a standard def CRT using the red/white/yellow composite connections.  On the HDTV I get absolutely nothing.  On the CRT I get sound only and no picture using the composite connections.  Is it likely the yellow cable for video is broken?  The system is definitely NTSC as are both TV's.  I am seeing mixed messages online that the composite cables (red/white/yellow) can or cannot be used for the purposes of playing games.  Can anyone tell if they should?  Should I just buy a new sealed set?  Should I go the component route which I really do not want to as I want to mainly play the games on the standard big box CRT and I am not sure if the one set of component inputs on the back of the older TV actually work?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

  • Think off-center.
Are you switching between video on your psp? (Via xmb or just holding the screen brightness button?)

I am manually switching to the video mode through the menus and also trying to switch to video mode by holding the button for 5+ seconds.

Composite (red/white/yellow) won't work however you have it set up, you need the Component (Y/Pb/Pr), the Composite cables were made for the 2000's, and I think they only work with movies on those

Not only movies, they also work with PS1 Classics.

Here's Vagrant Story through composite on my PSP-2000:

If you want composite for regular PSP games (at least on 2000 models, not sure about 3000), the only solution is a FuSa SD plugin for custom firmwares. But the plugin is old, not many games support it, and those that do are buggy. Not recommended. Just get component cables and save yourself the hassle.

I have the A/V connector for my PSP's and they work on all games and video... not just movies and ps1 classics...
