A while back my wife and I needed to start shelfing our books, but with a few thousand books, we needed a way to get a lot more paperbacks per squarefoot of floor space than a normal bookshelf would give us, and I wasn't wanting to spend 3-4 grand on shelves.  I ended up getting cheap ($25 a bookshelf) shelves from wal-mart, and ended up putting them together without following the instructions.  Boy did I not follow the instructions:

The same idea works fine for console games:

The first pic is it 3 "UGCs" high, second is four, so about 3-4 inches high.  You can use cheap 1x4s or partical poard\plywood to make the sub-shelves, they only show when you remove a game in the front row, so don't worry about making them look too fancy.  This only works if your shelves are twice as deep as a case, but it has the advantage of not looking so empty with all the extra wasted shelving.

Not a bad idea, but to take one of the games in the back you have to take first one of the front

There's normally enough room where you grab the top, and kind of tilt at you pull, and you dont need to remove the front games (Or books).  Depends on the shelving you have, with really tall ones there is less overlap.  I've seen some collections posted where I think you could put three layers of games in with ease

I think you would be better off getting more shelves for the unit and adjusting the spacing to fit UGCs.  You could get a couple more rows out of that shelf for sure.

Just my personal preference though.

Definitely a great idea to save some space.

I'm personally not using that shelf except for books, my game room has built in shelving you can see here: http://rhwiii.info/blog/archives/1068 Game room currently looks nothing like that, right now it's littered with empty boxes from moving, and game stuff piled still where I need to sort it.

One thing I dislike about most shelving though is the wasted "front space', where the games are stored way in the back. a heck of a waste of space.
