You run in several field sports, take baseball as an example...

but the same thing happens in Rugby, which is also called Rugby Football, (governing body the RFU "Rugby Football Union"),(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saracens_F.C.,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlequin_F.C., also in team names)
so maybe thats how it (gridiron) came to be know as football?
