Is there a guide on how to create your own covers? I couldn't find one...

Unfortunately you're right, isn't at all.

Maybe I should do a quick how-to. With some of the basics out of the way, people could easily explore some of the other, more complex tools. Knowing how to draw and manipulate the vector lines is about 90% of what one would need to use it fairly effectively.

I would love it if you did.  I'm fine exploring the options, but it's just frustrating as hell when faced with a blank page and not knowing where to go next.  I am completely self taught on photoshop, so i'm not a total fool. lol

I often craft logos in illustrator for covers I work on but ultimately I finish my work in Photoshop. What is submitted to the cover project is a jpeg at 300 dpi, so however you look at it, everything gets rasterized in the end.

But templates could be upped in AI/EPS format, which would give cover makers WAY more control over their use, not to mention squeeze the file size WAY down. I think the Shenske SNES template is like 25MB iirc. Could do all that in illustrator in about 1MB I bet (as I'm sure you already know ;) ).

I'll try and get something written up this week. It's really not too bad at all once you get the hang of it :D
