We all know Sonic took a nosedive somewhere after the Genesis and 32X, but have there been any bright spots since? Reading around some other forums and articles, it seems pretty disputed. So, are there any modern Sonic games worth buying and playing?

Some fun games in the modern era are:
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Rush
Sonic Advance 1-2-3
Sonic Generations
Heroes

Not the best games for some of them, but still fun to play. And most are cheep enough to get.

IMO, The best Sonic games were Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckes. Every other game has at least one big problem.
The series as a whole is fairly mediocre. With only a few actually good games (1/2/3/Knux) Some fun but flawed games (Adventure1+2/Heroes/Advance/Rush/Colors) Meh titles (CD/Most Gamegear/Mastersystem/3D Blast/Unleashed) And a lot of crap ('06/Shadow/Shuffle/Labyrinth/Chronicles)

How is Sonic Unleashed on PS2? I got it in a bundle and am wondering if it is worth keeping.

Sonic's nosedive began squarely after Sega closed their console division. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast were phenomenal games in their time. Though I will say SA2 has aged considerably better than SA1, if you're coming back to them now. (Don't worry, the story doesn't carry over, so feel free to start there!) The more common Gamecube remakes of these games (Director's Cut and SA2:Battle) are also FLAWLESS ports, and only stand to make each game even better.

Sonic Heroes is where the fall truly began. I personally didn't enjoy that one at all, and I wouldn't wish ANY of the following years of console releases on my worst enemies. Pure. Unadulterated. Garbage. (In other words, feel free to burn Sonic Unleashed. It's the cream of the crap-crop.) The handheld games were fine, if that's your bag. The development team Sega got to make the 2D handheld games were really consistent at making games that... didn't suck. And that's about it. Not great. Just, not sucky. (Which, at the time, was 'good' in comparison to what was being made on consoles.) They were decent and playable and all, but in my professional opinion: If you played one, you played them all. They REALLY didn't change much over time.

Around the time of Sonic Colors, I think Sega realized they had dragged their bread and butter through the mud plenty enough, and really cleaned up their act. Colors was a refreshing return to form, Sonic 4 was a nice (if slightly flawed) love letter to classic fans, and SONIC GENERATIONS? Hooooooooooeyy. I felt bliss for the first time since Sega stopped making consoles... That might be the lifelong Sonic fanboy inside me, pulling at my nostalgic heartstrings, but it's still the least-flawed experience you're gonna find in Sonic's Post-Dreamcast era. Hands down.

Also, Sonic Lost Worlds is looking pretty promising, but I'll save my opinion on that one for when it actually comes out. Either way, his future FINALLY seems to be looking a bit brighter.

...Also, I just came back from a 1yr+ long break from the site just to respond to this topic. :P So I hope it's helpful.

You both gave me everything I needed to know, thank you! I'm actually selling an extra PS2 to a friend so I'll be "nice" and include Sonic Unleashed as their free game  ;D

And by the way, I also need to thank you SonicAdvDX, because if you're the same guy who made the UGC collection videos (which I'm sure you are) then you brought me here in the first place. So thanks for that as well!

Unleashed is alright, the sonic stages are sorta fun, warehog stages are kinda boring. I'd say keep it sense you already have it.

As for Adventure, 2 is defiantly the better one, though the Knuckles stages are terrible, think of Banjo Kazooie without the fun. 1 is nor very good, but it is very fun, kinda like a bad Si-Fi movie in a way, though maybe on a higher level, Check out my Playthrough of it on Power Plaid VIDEO HERE, I have no gotten to the meet of the game yet in the part that is up, but it can give you a good idea of the game. Later in the yet to be uploaded footage, me and my friend have a lot of fun just messing about in the game. Get the Gamecube versions over the Dreamcast.

I have not played Heroes in a long time, so my opinion is kinda on nostalgia, I should revisit it soon.

Hah, yeah that's me! That's so cool to hear!  ;D

Those videos have been a blessing and a curse. It seems like the first thing everybody does when I refer them here is they make an account to send me a private message saying "Thx 4 ur vids but damn this site is confusing smh. where i download the covers at? i cnt find the 1 i want!" Hahaha, but I'm glad I've been able to make a fellow pro-collector out of you! :P It really is gratifying to see your beloved memories all cased up and displayed the way they deserve to be. I'm happy every day that I found this site!

Also, on this, yeah, I suppose suggesting a burning of the game was a little harsh. The hedgehog/daytime stages are pretty great. In fact, I think most of the Sonic Colors engine was lifted from that game. (Albeit with a vastly improved camera) BUT, the nighttime stages made the game UNPLAYABLE. Think of it this way. You spend 2-3 minutes running through a pretty fun Sonic style stage, only to sit through a painfully boring 25-minute Werehog level. Rinse and repeat 8 times and you have the game. IF ONLY there was a way to play through the game without turning into the Werehog, I could recommend it. But, In it's current state? BURN IT, I GOT ANGRY AT IT AGAIN.

I really liked adventure 2 battle. I have a copy of Sonic Heros on the gamecube and I think it is a fun game it has the same feel as adventure 2 minus raising those little chiya pet things (bonus imo).        We all know that sonic is all about speed so it seems fitting he would have a racing game. Racing games for me are redundant after the first need for speed but I want to recommend Sonic Riders on the gamecube. It has a great story line (hunting for ancient babylonian treasure) and has ALL the characters we know it does not make you feel like your playing a typical car reacing game.

sonic 06 is actually pretty fun to play through atleast once. You'll want to throw your controller at the tv with how many times you'll die trying to get past something simple.

Generations is the only one that's good. The rest are mediocre or worse. Even Generations has terrible boss battles.

Yeah... The man speaks truth. I think my brain blocks those out when I think back on that game. XD Especially the final boss, ugh. Where's the effin' Biolizard, man? You don't disrespect the Biolizard by putting him on the handheld version, Sega.

If you haven't already, get rid of PS2 Unleashed. I understand it was built on the '06 engine, which should explain to you the level of quality you'll get out of that one. Also, I apologize in advance. You sparked a rant.

Sonic Adventure 2 was the last 3D Sonic game I really enjoyed despite the rage-inducing Knuckles/Rouge stages (although I will say that Colors and Generations were very good, but didn't have the same "feel" I was looking for). Sonic Heroes was the first Sonic game I actually ragequit after being infuriated at the controls and the game's overall lack of polish. Sonic went from a very definitive feeling of acceleration and weight to a system where he accelerates way too quickly and has no weight to his movements at all (turning on a dime completely without slowing down threw off my entire learned knowledge of how Sonic games work), making him way hard to control in comparison to SA2. But the Special Stages were the last straw. I actually got to one particular Special Stage where the tube was making a right turn while going downhill, and the line of balloons were on the inside of that turn. There was something about the geometry of that inner bend that actually somehow managed to slow down my forward momentum, screwing me over on the time limit, effectively punishing me for playing the Stage how the Stage was telling me to play it. I missed an Emerald through absolutely no fault of my own and quit the game forever. I have not played it since launch month.

Shadow the Hedgehog was an additional kick in the teeth. Based on the Heroes engine that I already didn't like, the story was nonsensical and felt like a terrible fanfiction story given life. If you want to make an "edgy" game with a plethora of guns and a cocky, stereotypically "cool badass" character then your point of comparison should be Devil May Cry, not Sonic the Hedgehog. The guns somehow made the game even more complicated than the mission-based system already made it (with a dumb, non-responsive "YOU SHOULD ONLY BE LOOKING FORWARD EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO BACKTRACK" camera making things worse), and being required to beat the game a bajillion different times to get the "true" ending only added insult to insult. What a piece of shit.

Sonic '06 was released in an unfinished state. It's beyond salvation. I strongly recommend watching the Game Grumps' playthrough of the game for a pretty accurate representation of what it's like to play through that game.

Sonic Unleashed... I feel like I'm the only one in the world who actually preferred the Werehog stages over the speed stages in Sonic Unleashed. Playing as the Werehog, I could at least make-believe that I was playing as Knuckles which made it actually fun (although that being said, it WAS a Werehog stage that made me ragequit the game). I felt like Sega actually lost their way even more with Unleashed. The good Sonic stages in SA1 and 2 combined long running segments with a decent mix of platforming and branching paths to keep things interesting. Unleashed's speed segments in comparison felt slippery, and entirely too focused on holding down the "Blast" button for as long as you could down extremely long straightaways. I hated the awkward transitions to 2D during these stages as well, feeling like in order to do well at those sections I was supposed to already know what was coming right away, as a fuckup in those segments usually meant you missed a jump off of a rail that you didn't know was ending.

In short, I feel like Unleashed sacrificed the tight controls and high speeds of the first two Adventure games in exchange for spectacle (LOOK HOW FAST YOU'RE GOING WOW KEEP PRESSING THAT SQUARE BUTTON GOOD JOB DO YOU GUYS LIKE OUR GAMES AGAIN YET).

Generations seemed like a huge apology letter, and Sonic 4 Episode 2 showed that they were actively listening to community feedback after the bad gamefeel of Episode 1. So if Sega keeps taking fan feedback into consideration like they seem to have been in recent years, then I feel like things will get better. The last thing I want is for Sonic to suffer the same fate as Mega Man.
