Modern Sonic

We all know Sonic took a nosedive somewhere after the Genesis and 32X, but have there been any bright spots since? Reading around some other forums and articles, it seems pretty disputed. So, are there any modern Sonic games worth buying and playing?

larryinc64:

Some fun games in the modern era are:
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Sonic Rush
Sonic Advance 1-2-3
Sonic Generations
Heroes

Not the best games for some of them, but still fun to play. And most are cheep enough to get.

IMO, The best Sonic games were Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckes. Every other game has at least one big problem.
The series as a whole is fairly mediocre. With only a few actually good games (1/2/3/Knux) Some fun but flawed games (Adventure1+2/Heroes/Advance/Rush/Colors) Meh titles (CD/Most Gamegear/Mastersystem/3D Blast/Unleashed) And a lot of crap ('06/Shadow/Shuffle/Labyrinth/Chronicles)

How is Sonic Unleashed on PS2? I got it in a bundle and am wondering if it is worth keeping.

Sonic's nosedive began squarely after Sega closed their console division. Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast were phenomenal games in their time. Though I will say SA2 has aged considerably better than SA1, if you're coming back to them now. (Don't worry, the story doesn't carry over, so feel free to start there!) The more common Gamecube remakes of these games (Director's Cut and SA2:Battle) are also FLAWLESS ports, and only stand to make each game even better.

Sonic Heroes is where the fall truly began. I personally didn't enjoy that one at all, and I wouldn't wish ANY of the following years of console releases on my worst enemies. Pure. Unadulterated. Garbage. (In other words, feel free to burn Sonic Unleashed. It's the cream of the crap-crop.) The handheld games were fine, if that's your bag. The development team Sega got to make the 2D handheld games were really consistent at making games that... didn't suck. And that's about it. Not great. Just, not sucky. (Which, at the time, was 'good' in comparison to what was being made on consoles.) They were decent and playable and all, but in my professional opinion: If you played one, you played them all. They REALLY didn't change much over time.

Around the time of Sonic Colors, I think Sega realized they had dragged their bread and butter through the mud plenty enough, and really cleaned up their act. Colors was a refreshing return to form, Sonic 4 was a nice (if slightly flawed) love letter to classic fans, and SONIC GENERATIONS? Hooooooooooeyy. I felt bliss for the first time since Sega stopped making consoles... That might be the lifelong Sonic fanboy inside me, pulling at my nostalgic heartstrings, but it's still the least-flawed experience you're gonna find in Sonic's Post-Dreamcast era. Hands down.

Also, Sonic Lost Worlds is looking pretty promising, but I'll save my opinion on that one for when it actually comes out. Either way, his future FINALLY seems to be looking a bit brighter.

...Also, I just came back from a 1yr+ long break from the site just to respond to this topic. :P So I hope it's helpful.

You both gave me everything I needed to know, thank you! I'm actually selling an extra PS2 to a friend so I'll be "nice" and include Sonic Unleashed as their free game  ;D

And by the way, I also need to thank you SonicAdvDX, because if you're the same guy who made the UGC collection videos (which I'm sure you are) then you brought me here in the first place. So thanks for that as well!
