Are The Irish Really Friendly?

I'm doing a report for college, and we were asked to tackle the topic of, "Are The Irish Really Friendly?". I'm part of a team, and the other guys are putting similar questions up on other forums, so I'm just wondering if you guys wouldn't mind giving your honest opinion on the matter. As an English man, living in Ireland, I have formed my own opinion, and considering I have lived here for the past 13 years, I'm guessing you know where I stand. No offense will be taken from your comment, so please feel free to be honest.

EDIT: Feel free to remove this thread in 2 - 3 weeks time. It will have served its purpose by then.

EDIT 2.0: I'm not asking a question, as much as I'm asking you for your opinion and experiences. I just wanted to quickly clear up any discrepancies.

Well, my parents are from Ireland, even though I grew up in the states.  I have been to Dublin and Shannon (where my families live) as well as the surrounding areas dozens of times in my 30 years on this planet.  Overall I say yes they are.  I may be a bit biased, and there are always assholes here and there, but my experiences have been really positive in Bray, Donebate and Rush (the primary areas I stay)

Got to say its a ridiculous question.  You are basically asking about a racial stereotype.  Can all black men run fast? 

My parents are Irish (Dublin/Kilkenny) but I grew up in London, and consider myself a Brit/English.   Are some Irish people friendly? Yes!  Are some Irish people assholes? Yes.  Same as every other nation.  There are definite cultural differences between Brits and Irish,  but I wouldn't say the Irish are as a nation any more friendly than anyone else.

I don't dispute that at all. It really is a absurd project, but it has to be done; it's worth 15% of the whole module. I was born in London, and lived there for ten years. I have been living in Laois (just South of Dublin) for the past fourteen - fifteen years. Finding out what stereotypes about the Irish exist, then disputing each stereotype we find, is the overall goal of the project. Please don't take offense from this question, it's really not what the post was about; it's just a quick study.

There is also the stereotype that the Irish like a drink.  That's certainly the case on one side of my family, but the polar opposite on the other.  Stereotypes are usually just an unfounded generalisation, based on an observation of a relatively small cross section.  The world is a very different place than it was 30/40/50 years ago, with Internet, international tv and travel.  Cultures have merged and changed.  

I guess if you could look up crime rates it would say if the generalisation was correct. Lol

I live in France,  and generally British people think the French are arrogant.  But every single person I have spoken to around here is absolutely lovely.  I've met plenty of arrogant people in Paris,  but Paris doesn't define the whole of the country.  Anyway - enough of my ramblings.  Good luck with the project. Lol

Shalayle wielding, Guinness drinking, ready to fight at smallest trigger, potato eating, supersticious, almost as religious as Americans, when old white bearded and bit red faced, leather jacket wearing, somewhat foulmouthed, laugh with bit shrieking voice, mostly work in coalmines, not as football crazy as Scotch and Brits.

I guess that's all the stereotypes that quickly come to mind

The module is mainly based around group dynamics, but also professionalism and ethics. It's a team project to produce a poster, and discuss the corresponding topic.

I visited Ireland for two weeks. Decent people, nothing out of the ordinary. One asshole at the Rent-a-Car at the airport was all I encountered in terms of negativity.


They do take pride in their sources of water/land, that waters of the lochs were so clean and beautiful.

My award for most friendliest people would have to be the  Japanese and the Turks (based on personal experience of course)
