I'm curious, how did YOU case your collection? I started not too long ago and your experiences are probably better than mine :D

Questions that can help the discussion:
Which country do you live in?
Which case did you buy? From which provider and for what purpose? Was the shipping expansive?
Did your manuals fit, or did you have to mod your case? What about the end-product quality?
Any other personal thoughts?.

• USA, Ohio
• UGCs from Media Center. Purpose? Um, to case my games :P Shipping is reasonable. I tend to order 2 or more cases at a time, which cuts the cost down considerably.
• Never understood the need/desire to case the manuals. I don't need to read them, and they just get in the way. Mine are all stored in bins.

I've been making covers and casing games for just about 2 years now.  I'm at a tad over 500 covers and just as many cased games/systems so far. I use UGCs for NES, SNES, N64, Genesis/32X, and my portables.
I use DS cases for all the portable games (GB/GBC/GBA, GameGear, Neo Geo Pocket, and Wonderswan), and my tiny collection of TG-16 games.  Everything else is stored in their original cases (PS1/2/3, Xbox/Xbox360, Saturn, 64DD, Dreamcast, and Gamecube).

Love this site, love the community, love casing my collection :D

^------- Pretty much what he said.

Though I live in Missouri in the states. Been here for a little over 2 years myself.

Mainly Use:
UGC's for NES, SNES, N64,
DS cases for all handhelds
and original cases (If possible.)

Not to sure how I want to case my Atari games yet though...

Once i learn how i will be making 90% retail covers for the original black box Nintendo games and using UGC's. I say 90% because ill tweak the spine and background a little. But for the rest of them I have retail boxes for most other important games in my collection and will use game box protectors simply because i like the original look. Cant get much more original than the actual box. Retail black boxes are way too expensive to buy the 25 more i would need.

The idea is to case the 30 black box games and let them be the centerpiece since, to me, theyre the most iconic. Followed by old Capcom and maybe Konami. Those two companies put out the best games by far along with the Dragon Warrior games, Final Fantasy, Wizards & Warriors and a few more. So, display cased games up top and line up loose ones below.

For NES games I use the UGC and put the games in a dust cover with the manual also in the dust cover behind the cart.

For the few NES games that have large manuals I just squeeze them in.

For SNES I started using double wide DVD cases with manual clips .. it was the best solution I could find for manual storage and modding the cases is quite easy.  The cost to get to Ottawa, ON is about $1 a case - similar to UGC.

I also like the black case for the SNES games as most of the boxes were black based originally.  I recently switched to SNES Verticals as they just look more uniform on a shelf.

Here are some pics of the double wide DVD case solution:

Here's what the case looks like pre-mod

NES Mod

SNES Mod

NES Cart + Manual - Note that the clips don't press down far enough to keep thin NES manuals in place

SNES Cart + Manual - Note that with a dust cover and thick manual there is a slight bulge to the case but it will close

Flat view of cases

Spine view

I ultimately decided to stick with the UGC for NES games and the Double Wide DVD cases for SNES games.

If only cart is in they rattle freely like in UGC without any of the inner walls left.
But with manual in there not at all.

Instead of double wide dvd cases, why not use a VHS case?

No modding needed :)

VHS cases are vacuum formed pieces of crap. Over time they become brittle and dented and cracked. Plus buying them in bulk is probably not as easy.

DVD cases are much sturdier, made of molded plastic. Plus they are cheap and easy to buy.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

You're thinking of just one type. There are VHS cases that are very similar to UGCs.

I've actually got some old clear Nintendo cases. They were pretty common with rental stores back in the day. Granted they are not common today, can be expensive, you have to put your own slipcover on, and make your own cover!

Sounds like fun huh? lol.

I've got close to 40 of them and only have 2 of them modified lol.

I don't have any of the Castlevania games yet, but I want to try and copy what Bear78 did and make a Trilogy box like the one he did here. I'd love to do this for all of my trilogy games someday.

They're actually really easy to find online, they're just typically more expensive than UGCs, making them pointless for anyone in the US.

The price could be same for us Canadians and a much better option if they fit snes/n64 games better with their respected manuals. I'll probably just end up getting UGCs and dealing with a smal bend on the manuals.. not that big of a deal for me.
