Hey all,

Like most of the members on this site, I'm interested in knowing what others think. I created this thread with the hopes of sparking some fun, interesting, and insightful discussion.

A few simple rules:

1. This list can include home consoles or handhelds.
2. In serious lists, try to only include systems that you have played.
3. If you have less than 10 consoles to list, list the ones that you can. If you have more than 10, list some honourable mentions!
4. The consoles do not have to be ranked (#1 being the best. #10 being the worst). However, this usually makes it more interesting (and requires more critical thinking)! If you are not ranking your list, indicate this by simply adding, "In no particular order".
5. Comment on others' posts! (But don't be an ass).

As the title says, this Top 10 is all about your favourite consoles and handhelds. This is not a debate about the best consoles and handhelds, just your preferences.

#1 GameCube
#2 Xbox 360
#3 DS
#4 N64
#5 Gameboy Advance
#6 Original Xbox
#7 PS2
#8 SNES

I am only gonna put eight because I haven't played enough games on other consoles to properly judge them. You could probably guess from my list that I'm 15 years old, I grew up with the oXbox, GameCube, and Gameboy Advance.

Runner up:  Sega Saturn
I like this system a lot, but unfortunately its lack of great games keeps it from the list

10: N64
This system made the list for 5 reasons:  Goldeneye, Star Fox 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and WWF Wrestlemania 2000.  While the system had some other good games I think a lot of them are over rated, but any of these five were enough to make me get the system.

9: Nintendo DS/GBA
Game boy advance was going to go in this spot, but honestly since the DS can play GBA games (as well as GB and GBC) I opted for the system that can do it all.  But make no mistake, in terms of games, I think the GBA is miles ahead of the DS

8: Dreamcast
A truly underrated system.  This console was way ahead of its time, and I remember picking mine up on 9/9/99 and being completely blown away.  I still play IllBleed, Carrier and Skies of Arcadia to this day

7: Playstation 2
In its heyday, this was my favorite system.  but over the years I've cooled a lot and realized that while for its time it was a masterpiece, a lot of the games weren't as wonderful as they first appeared.  Still, with some truly epic games, this system will go down as one of the best.

6:  Gamecube
This just barely beat the PS2, but with the Resident Evil Remake, Eternal Darkness, and Twilight Princess I would gladly go back to this system any day of the week.

5: Genesis
It was hard for me to put this at number 5, but it's arch rival is just a microstep above it.  That said, Genesis will always be a nostalgic getaway for me.  It was my second system as a kid and I don't even remember how many days/nights were lost playing it.  And I still prefer some of the Genesis versions of multiplats over the SNES counterpart.

4: SNES
Even though I didn't get this system until the end of its life, this has (arguably) the best library of games ever...IF you like RPGs and Platformers.  FF2, FF3, Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past, Mario, DKC, Metroid, Mega Man X...I could go on all day.  Square and Nintendo made this system one that is an absolute must have...but it owes pretty much all of its success to...

3: NES
My first system.  The PERFECT game library.  There was a lot of crap, but a lot of good, and a whole lot of great.  How many franchises got their start here?  To some of us, we peaked with 3rd generation and it's all been downhill.

2: Playstation One.
This system...changed how I look at life.  Resident Evil, Final Fantasy VII and Final Doom shaped me into the gamer that I would become to this very day.  The graphics have aged terribly, and a lot of the games are "you had to be there in 1997" in terms of quality, but the list of groundbreaking games on this system is legendary.  This system is what turned me on to RPGs, horror games and first person shooters.

1:  Xbox 360.  This was a no brainer for me.  I love achievements.  Simple as that.  And I really enjoy seeing how high I can get my gamerscore.  While I understand that I may be looking at this with rose tinted glasses, being able to see a gamerscore is a nice way for me to validate what I do.  Also, my favorite game series of all time, Mass Effect, got its start here.  While in 10 years I may look back and decide I was nuts, right now the library of games, the graphics, and the gamerscore make this my go to pick up and play system.  At least for now.

I didnt put in the Dreamcast because i never had one back in the days and still don't have one....played it a lot at friends/relative house though. SNES/NES and Sega Genesis we're the golden ages for me, i remember renting new games every weekend, getting off the school bus at the video game rental place every friday at 4pm! Then going back home by feet be it windy/cloudy/rainy/snowing...just to play that new game! Nowaday, we just buy them...hehe

1) PS1
2) SNES
3) PS2
4) Xbox 360
5) NES
6) Dreamcast
7) PS3
8) N64
9) Sega Genesis
10) PSP

I'm not sure about my ranking outside of my top two, but the PS1 and SNES were favorites of mine for sure. I dig the DS/3DS and Sega Saturn too, but they couldn't crack my top 10 list.

These are some excellent lists so far.

Megatron, you offered a lot of insight into your picks, and it's fun to read.

The SNES seems to have wormed its way into the hearts of every gamer so far, regardless of age.

So far it seems that older systems and newer ones tend to get the most love, with the middle children slightly lagging (your XBOXes, N64s and the like).

Arseen with a surprise pick of the Virtual Boy at #10!

MisterDaSausage brings up an interesting question. Do you guys miss renting games? Don't get me wrong, I love owning and collecting games, but boy do I have some fond memories of renting them.

It's just so curious little piece of hardware that still gets occasional hacks done, and not that they are almost finished with the link cable, who knows what they come up with!!! 8)

Beings that I'm 27 I've played just about everything from Atari on up. I've played many many games to have a good opinion on this subject and I will try to explain why I like what I like.

10. Game boy. No how could this not be anywhere on anyone's list? This system held it's grounds for a loooong time. And many great games to go with that timespan.

9. PS1. This was the first console that I bought for myself at around $300 with Final Fantasy Tactics. A lot of my favorite RPG's are on this system and I won't forget all the memories I had with it.

8. Sega Dreamcast. Though there isn't a spot for it in my heart and IMO a huge lack of great games, the Dreamcast still gets on the list for one reason, you can easily burn games to play on it.

7. Sony PSP. This little system, with a custom firmware, is a great little machine. It also has a few great ports and you can also play anything from NES to PS1 on this handy dandy notebook... I many portable. Hell, you can even use it as a TV remote!

6. NGC. The GameCube is a system that's hit and miss, but there are great titles that came to this system though most are crap. But with RE 0-4 and CVX, the GBA player, the first Animal Crossing released in the states, and a few other select titles.

5. NES. This is practically the first system I ever really played. Got it for Christmas when I was 6 and is a good system to fall back on when I have nothing else I really want to play. Especially when my library of  games is 200+.

4 and 3. It was hard to chose between just one for this spot but I'm going to say the Xbox 360 and the Nintendo 3DS: because now a days I'm playing the 360 the most at home and the 3DS when I'm out and about. Both systems have many titles that could keep me entertained for hours.

2. GBA. For the simple fact that there are loads of ported games that you can play and many new great games to add to the library. So many RPGs that are great! It's hard to shake a stick at.

1. SNES. Mainly because this has the best library of games. I've wasted many hours on this system as a kid and still do to this day. Final Fantasy 2/4, 3/6, and mystic quest, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana were all great RPGs and still are great.

Anything that wasn't included just doesn't have enough stuff that I want to play on a regular basis and doesn't meet standards to me.
What are you looking at? You think baby's don't like video games? THEN YOU DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT BABIES!!

Vectrex
7800
Odyssey
Commodore 64
Gameboy (B&W only)
2600
Apple IIe
Pong
TI-80
ColecoVision

Just kidding. That's what some snotty old fart on Digipress would prolly say. "Anything post 2nd gen is crap! (Except for the DMG, but that's only because it's in B&W)"

For seriously, it's more like this.

SNES
360
PS2
PS1
Saturn
NES
Dreamcast
N64
GBA
Genesis

I can't really put all of them in a 1-10 order, but those are definitely my favs.

Do you guys miss renting games? Don't get me wrong, I love owning and collecting games, but boy do I have some fond memories of renting them.

I enjoyed the rental days, but I've come to realize that I appreciate ownership even more. NES Complex summed it up pretty well.  click to 3:37-3:53 of the video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXAhZ3b5iHY

It's nice owning just as many good games as the rental store ever did and being able to play them whenever I like without having to worry about the dreaded return time and paying another $5 to re-rent a great game. It doesn't have to be that expensive of a hobby either if you're smart (and super patient) about it.
