ok, lets say I download a game from xbox live (or the playstation store), I want to have a box on my shelf, could I : copy the game to a USB drive, transfer that to my PC, burn it to a CD, run that CD in My console?
would it be able to read the game data?

Nope doesn't work. The system can't boot game files from a data disc  :'(  (even if you already have it downloaded on your system)

But from my understanding, you can boot it from a flash drive.

For both you need mod chip.
Or is there soft-mod way?

Well, if anyone finds out about how to do this without modding the console, i would love to know too! Got so much game downloaded on PS3 and xbox 360, i would love to case them and having a dvd that i could install the game from at anytime!
Just the way content manager works with the Vita, i just back up the games to my computer and connect the vita whenever i want to install it back.
But this time, with a dvd for ps3/xbox! Would love that, i'll also do some research on this!

I remember backing up xbl arcade games on a thumb drive to save space not too long ago.  I don't remember if they ran off the stick or not but it can always be copied over back to the hard drive.  Don't know about psn though

just to clarify, id only be interested in doing this for games such as "duck tales remastered" or "scott pilgrim"
NOT for stuff like "bioshock" or "resident evil 5"

im sure i read somewhere else  that they could be backed up to usb sticks

(thanks Superchop)

i know for a fact you can do it with wii downloads, but the ps3 & 360 haven't been cracked quite that far open yet afaik.

Well I tried it out.  I used a microsd card with a usb adapter and plugged it into the xbox.

The xbox had to format it and after that the microsd card acted as another hdd.

I moved over Scott Pilgrim and Call of Duty Classic onto the microsd and made sure that it was no longer on the xbox's hdd.

I was able to play both games just fine and they showed up under the "My Games" list.

Although once I removed the microsd card/adapter, both games disappeared from the games list.

I'm sure that a usb stick will act in the same manner.  I haven't done a full retail game, but i'm assuming that it'll be exactly the same.

Awesome,  didnt realise 360 supported this.  Not downloaded much on the 360, but might need to do some covers for the few things I have.

I just hope any see the light and relea a firmware update to allow it on ps3 as I can't see the ps3 store lasting more tan a couple of years after ps4 launch

My apologies also, I know I read it also, but I guess I got thrown off When Dr.Agon asked if they can be ran from a USB stick a couple posts after :(

But yeah, I knew I could back up the games, but now that I found out that they can actually be ran outside of the hdd...I don't have to worry about deleting games to free up space lol, I'll just move all the xbla games onto the micro sd card.  Guess I'll have to keep an eye out for more best buy deals of the day on the 32 gig cards
