I played SFII first in the Arcades (and was my first contact with SF franchise too), but the more nostalgic one to me is SFA2 on SNES (I just love that version, even being the most downgrade of all).... I played for ages, and still one of my favorites, though, in terms of gameplay, the PSone or Saturn ones are way too better (obviously).

And I forgot to mention about the Vs. Series, I didn't noticed that everybody is counting it too =P.
well, my favorite is MvC1... I love the simplicity, the roster, musics, the controls (that don't underestimates the player, without being as complex as SF games), the extras,...everything! ... I love :3

and my rank stay like that:
Marvel vs. Capcom - Clash of Super Heroes > Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter > Capcom vs. SNK 2 > Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (JPN and the western versions) > and the others.
(even that games like MvC2 and UMvC3, even with its faults, has a lot of potential and are still appreciated by the public and in large events).
Something, something about future;

I've only played a few of them, but my personal favorite is still "Super Street Fighter II" for the SNES.

SSFII Turbo for the 3DO or SF EX+A for PS1

That's my vote

My favorite version of Street Fighter is Super Street Fighter II Turbo. Not the HD remix, but the original version of the game. That game has been my favorite for many years and someday I wish to own the arcade version of the game, or at least the arcade game board. Problem with owning that board is that it comes with a high price tag. Maybe some day.

You, sir, have a very good taste. Nothing will ever beat ST for me.

I am a fan of the 3DO version of II, except for the controller layout (Would prefer to have a six button one), I can assume it is the best of its day, but the PC Engine version is just so impressive in my honest opinion. But in all reality, they all pretty much play the same, just grab a version and have fun.

I really gotta go with Street Fighter IV, or any of its variants. SF4 is easily one of the most balanced fighting games of all time, great for beginners and experts alike.

The runner up would be Street Fighter Alpha 3, and although not a Street Fighter game persay, Marvel Vs Capcom 2

surely SFIV, ... given the support and maintenance that Capcom has renewed all these years (since 2008) in the title, no doubt it became one of the most technical, deep and balanced game in the entire series (and perhaps between all the current fighting games general) .. at every big event brings pleasant surprises, and it is still able to surprise with the arrival of Ultra-SFIV ... there is a good amount of characters with great variety, is very well polished visually, fantastic soundtrack, all according to be the best game of the decade.

but in my personal rank (still keeping SFIV in the top), not counting the "Vs. Series", there we are:
Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition (currently) > Street Fighter III Third Strike > Street Fighter Alpha 2 > Hyper Street Fighter II > the rest of franchise.

Yeah, all that may be true, but they made what I feel is a massive faux pas when they went with 3D visuals.

Ick.
