windwaker was the point where zelda stopped being magical but i still really liked it. actually really liked the sailing parts for some reason. i guess it's mostly because majora's mask was excusable as sort of an expansion pack but ever since they've just been reusing the same engine.

OK, since a lot of people asked this, here are my reasons for loathing Windwaker.
Before I continue, you need to know three things:

-I was born in 1982, and have played every major Zelda game released in the U.S when it came out.  I grew up with this franchise.
-When Windwaker came out I was in my early 20s, and the previous console game was Majora's Mask, so I was really expecting greatness.
-Because I was 20, there is little nostalgic value here (Unlike early games in the series which aren’t great, but I enjoyed them in my youth)

I haven’t played the game in a few years, but these are some of my major grievances with Windwaker (not in any particular order)

1.    The graphics.  Petty, I know, but first impressions are important.  I was expecting Twilight Princess and we got Animal Crossings.  I have cooled on this over the years, but I was pretty pissed a decade ago

2.    THE SAILING.  I will never be convinced that sailing around a bland ocean is anywhere NEAR the exploration thrill of Hyrule field.  In a field you can do anything.  In a boat you can…sail.  And fire a canon.  Boring.

3.   Speaking of sailing…FINDING THE TRIFORCE.  What the hell was this?  Only a handful of dungeons and then the last third of the game is sailing around the ocean looking for pieces of the triforce.  I know they amended this for the remake, but still haunts me

4.   Hyrule is submerged, and for whatever reason they kept it this way.  While I know they established new Hyrule, and the split timeline and everything…this still felt like a kick in the balls to me.  Not only is it submerged, but the king even wishes it to STAY submerged at the end.

5.   Ganondorf is fat.  I’m sorry, I can’t shake that image.  And before anyone says he was a pig, Ganon is a pig beast, Ganondorf is a man.

I could keep going, but I won’t.  I don’t hate this game, and I don’t consider it the worst in the series, but I do think it’s near the bottom.  I like most of the plot, and parts are bad ass.  I am just disappointed that the FIRST HD ZELDA GAME is going to be one of my least favorites in the series.

I was going to write an item-by-item rebuttal in The Wind Waker's defense, but couldn't really word it without unintentionally sounding overly sanctimonious. So I'm electing not to post it. Instead, I'd like to offer that as someone born in 1983, I respectfully disagree with 4 out of 5 items on the list you've presented on the grounds that The Wind Waker is not (and was never trying to be) Ocarina of Time 2.

People love Windwaker.  I get that.  I am not tying to change anyone's opinion.  However, I truly doubt anyone will change MY opinion.
As for what I find wrong with it, I have stated some of the big reasons why.  But you bring up a good point...you say this isn't Ocarina 2.

I would argue, according to the narration, that it IS Ocarina 2.  At least story wise.  Gameplay it is a far different beast, and I freely admit that I'm just not in to the style.  But story, this is a direct sequel to Ocarina, be it centuries later.  It's one of the few direct sequels this series has.  That's why the flooding of Hyrule hits so strong with me...I saved this land.  Many times.  And for what?  So they would flood it anyway?  Did any of it matter?

...maybe I'm putting too much in to this, and I get that with sequels change comes, this one just felt really dramatic.  And if at the end the flood was gone and all was saved I'd probably feel better.  But this really felt wrong to me.  Everyone has their breaking point with a sequel or reboot - be it Superman, Star Trek, Star Wars, DMC or whatever.  I guess this is mine.

Ah, I see better now what you mean by Item 4. Now I get that you're coming from an emotional place on the narrative, and that's a point I'd feel like an asshole arguing, so I'm glad I didn't. You're totally validated. *hat tip*

Yes, narrative-wise, you and I agree that it's a technical sequel to Ocarina, and one of the first Zeldas that was out-and-out intended to be a continuation of a previously-established storyline. However, I tend to view individual Zelda titles similarly to different Mega Man series (the Network Timeline not included). I view the relationship between Ocarina and Wind Waker much like I view the relationship between the Mega Man Classic and the Mega Man X series. Does that make sense? One hero's adventure ends, leaving another hero to pick up his mantle at a later point in time. The only exceptions to this rule are those where it is explicitly stated that you are playing as the same Link as a prior game, like the protagonist shared by A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening.

When I say Wind Waker isn't Ocarina 2, I mean that tons of people seemed to be expecting another game of the same quality (or better) as Ocarina with graphics on-par to what Nintendo had shown off with the Spaceworld demo footage of Link and Ganon facing off. I feel like they were expecting THAT kind of sequel, and decried Wind Waker when they didn't get it. In retrospect, I think Nintendo was smart by playing things off the way they did. It never would have been possible at the time to out-do the massive popularity and impact that Ocarina had, so they chose not to, while at the same time paying respect where it was due.

But I'll leave things off here. I won't try to sway you either way; I'm kinda done with traditional Internet Arguments. I like to engage in these kinds of exchanges to learn more about these things. I can't be "right" on liking a game that you don't, so I'd rather learn WHY you don't and use that knowledge to further my own understanding.

Tangentially, one friend of mine hasn't played a Zelda game all the way through since A Link to the Past. Story completely aside, he HATES the 3D Zeldas for being 3D. I see the 3D Zeldas as an extension of the 2D Zeldas, personally. The only thing that has really changed all that much from SNES to N64 is the placement of the camera, when it moved from over Link's head to (mostly) behind his back. But my friend could never really adjust to the perspective shift for some reason. In this case, I understand WHAT he doesn't like about modern Zelda titles, but I'm still not sure on the WHY. I expect him to be on-board for A Link Between Worlds, though, for obvious reasons.

EDIT: You're not putting too much into this. Story-wise, I understand completely. I feel the same way about other stories, so far be it from me to tell you you're overreacting. Cheers.

Interesting that Nintendo announced the 2DS. Me personally, am not too interested in it. I am a little disappointed that the Wii U is getting a price drop so soon after its launch. I have had mine since launch and it upsets me that I am out fifty bucks. The Zelda bundle looks really cool! I wish I would have waited for that. I did pre order the limited edition version of Wind Waker with the Ganon Statue! Looking forward to playing through Wind Waker in HD!

So the 2DS is getting a lot of press...

Anyone else excited for the Zelda/Wii U bundle and price drop?  I've been holding off on a Wii U for a while now because I assumed they'd release a gold one or some special edition for Zelda.  Glad I waited.  The only question I have to ask is:

WHY, OH WHY DID THEY HAVE TO REMAKE WINDWAKER!!??

Couldn't they have chosen, you know, a GOOD Zelda game?
...I know I am opening a new can of worms here, but I am a pretty hardcore Zelda fan, and this is probably my least favorite title.  Either way, preordered and ready to try.

I like the concept of Wind Waker.  Needed more meat (I.e. dungeons) and fewer stupid-ass fetch quests.

Also, the Japanese packaging for this set is amazing. I would buy the JP version for the packaging alone.

I originally wasn't even going to get the Wii U but since the Zelda bundle is coming out I know I will get it now.  I'm a huge Zelda fan and with other Zelda games coming out soon I'm all in for it and the PS4

Personally I'm just glad the system has some must have games coming out.  Mario U was alright, but there weren't any real system sellers that I didn't already have on another platform.
With Zelda, Smash Bros and Donkey Kong, hopefully a Metroid or Galaxy 3 is in the works

I loved windwaker and honestly would buy it for the Wii u, however not this version, I like my physical copies.

That box set has me all twisted, I want it, bad, but not sure what I should do with the current 4 CE strategy guides I own. I have it preordered on amazon but always afraid if I sell my current ones and something happens I don't get box set, or if I wait too long and the potential sale value drops on the ones I have lol

Think he is talking about the Collector Edition strategy guide box set they are selling. He's saying he has 4 of the guides and wants the box set but doesn't want to sale his too early incase he doesn't get it, or if he waits too long the value of his current 4 CE guides will go down in value.

Edit -

Love how only America gets a different box art lul. Love the blue that Jap and Euro get on theirs.
