I'm pretty happy with Avast. Just be sure to uninstall and delete your old antivirus programs, they work against each other if you have multiple ones running at the same time.

I second this.  Been using Avast (free version) for years and never had a lick of trouble with it.

I use a combo of MS Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. I have a friend that dose security systems for Casinos and police agencies. He told me that this the better than many paid AV software out there (including Norton).

  • Coffee... What would I do without you?
As some have mentioned both MSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) and AVG are both decent free anitvirus. I've used MSE for 3 or 4 years, and I haven't picked up a virus yet. Malware Bytes is also a good anti - malware program, so in combination with either MSE or AVG, you'll be pretty well protected. CCleaner from piriform is a decent piece of software for cleaning out your C drive, and correcting registers issues.

If your PC is freezing or slow just:

1, update your software.
2, turn off anything that runs upon launch, things that you don't need or use.
3, run a full scan, with both your antivirus or choice, and malware bytes.
4, defrag your hard drive.
5, run ccleaner to check for registry issues, and to clean your c drive.
6, (optional) use windows disk cleaner to delete any shadow copies or back-ups that you don't need.

EDIT: Someone made a good point. More than one antivirus will give you bother, as they'll conflict with each other.

1 antivirus + malware bytes + ccleaner = happy campers.

i use malwarebytes and have had no problems at all. i used to use spybot search and destroy (cant beat the name!) but it had some odd stability issues.

malwarebytes is nowhere near as pushy as norton with the popups and notifications, i would recommend it over just about anything else.

I use Comodo Firewall + anti-virus. Firewall even supports mac address filtering and global rules (including svchost and Windows OS [good for stopping bluetooth and ICS]).

Comodo is free and even offers free use of secure DNS servers and cloud-based scanning. Excellent defensive sandboxing and program control.

good stuff.
Code: [Select]
http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/free-internet-security.php
Achtung!
be sure to uncheck the use this computer as an ICS server checkbox under alert settings and be sure to check the box for IPv6 filtering. both options can be found under firewall behaviour settings. Also set stealth ports wizard to block all incoming connections. best to add a rule to block connections from all private address ranges not in use by your router. id est, if you are using 192.168 range, then block entire 10 and 172 ranges for better WiFi security - I've been on hacking war networks and it's amazing how one cann attack from a different subnet and ip range. whirl-around. yikes!

All I use is super anti-spyware. Haven't had a virus in years.
If you're having issues stop installing shady programs :P

by the way, I even block the Autoconfiguration ip range: 169.254.0.0-169.254.254.255 in the Network security policy tab under blocked zones.

I once used this address to attack a bastard linux user who kept slamming me with packets and using deauth. I set his ip in a bittorrent program as a proxy. LOL! bet ya didn't know that would work  8) good times ...

I will just throw my "third this" in here.  I used to use AVG but I've used Avast for years now and it's great.  It's not very draining on your system like McAfee or Norton, updates automatically, and as an actually catcher of the viruses it works great!  I don't go to too many fishy places but I have clicked a link or two knowing Avast had my back and thank god it did!  I personally use the pro version but the free version is great too.

been running comodo for a while

i think the only reason i had an issue this time was because i was running 2 anti-virus programmes at once, last time i used it Adaware was an anti-malware programme, assumed it still was, so i think running that and AVG was giving me the issue.

trying malwarebytes and avast,

thanks again for all suggestions and tips!

I'll throw in another for Microsoft Security Essentials.  Been running it since it came out years ago and have never had a problem.

Good idea for a thread!
I've been using AVG and spy bot for a long time now and been wanting to get away from them, so this will help me too.
