Can someone make some custom covers for NES Mega Man 1-6 using the Japanese art? I'd like to see them both in original Famicom form and in custom NES versions, with the Mega Man US logo (newer, MM5-8 logo) and no Japanese text.

I don't know if anyone owns the Famicom versions and can scan them, but the best art I was able to find online was at http://archive.sonic-hq.net/megaman/images/boxcover/

Mega Man:

Mega Man 2:

Mega Man 3:

Mega Man 4:

Mega Man 5:

Mega Man 6:

There's also some decent sized box art (for some of the games) at:

http://www.retrogame-shop.com/shop/index.php?cPath=21_31_63

and http://www.gamefaqs.com/search/index.html?game=Mega+Man&platform=19 in the images section (Japanese versions of course)

I'm in the same position you are. I'm actually more of a Famicom collector than an NES one, so almost universally I have to edit (in some cases, severely) the NES covers posted here. I've already made custom a custom set of Megaman 1-6 using elements of both lumberjack's design genious, my original discription he used, and a few other elements I peiced here and there. Unfortuntely the images you supplied are far too low resolution to be used (they would simply look awful blown up) but dont worry: I also own the Rockman 1-6 set and made custom spines. With a bit of work I'll be able to convert you a complete set of covers. I'll need your email though to send them to you.

That's cool! I do like Lumberjack's design as well. If you could make NES-styled covers in English using the Famicom art and giving them logos to match Mega Man 7 and 8 (they do use Japanese created art on the US versions of those don't they?), that would be really cool. If possible, I'd like to check out the raws as well.

So, which of the NES Mega Men, if any, use Japanese drawn art? I'm thinking 4-6 do? Maybe even the PAL version of 3?

My email address is marioxb@ameritech.net

Thanks a lot!

Actually, none. The art used for every single Mega Man game (including Megaman 7!!) use redone art for the US release.

Weren't the SNES/ PS1 and later versions at least drawn by the same artist(s) that did the Japanese art? I mean it's a WHOLE LOT better than the US Mega Man 1 and 2! Mega Man 3-5 are better, but Mega Man still looks Americanized. The art on Mega Man (6?) 7- current definitely looks Japanese in style.

For clarification, the first Rockman game to carry over its artwork from the Japanese is Rockman 8. Everything prior was drawn by american artists. Capcom hired an artist team that designed covers from Mega Man 3-7 on the SNES and all five Gameboy titles.

OK, that's some interesting trivia.

I like collecting Japanese items as well, problem is that is a lot more expensive than collecting the US versions!

Here's an idea for NES-styled Mega Man cases using the Japanese art from a custom back and spine I made for Mega Man Anniversary Collection for the GameCube:

No problem! See how I used the Mega Man 1 NES art, removing the title logo and picture and using it as a template for the Famicom art? That's the best way I could come up with putting the horizontal Famicom art into the Vertical NES orientation. You know what I just now noticed? Japanese NES was horizontal (for the most part) and US was vertical, but then the SNES was opposite. Vertical in Japan and horizontal in the US. Never noticed those quirks before.

For the most part you're right. There were some instances where this isn't the case though. Famicom Wars has a vertical box and Rockman's Soccer has a horizontal one.
