Do you care what version of a game you have?

Is black label better?

Is Player's Choice less desirable than the original?

I don't see why a Players Choice would less desirable.  If a game has to sell over a million before it becomes a Players Choice, there would seem to be ample supply of non-PC versions to go around.

I'm sure there are collectors that are picky about it though.

I prefer having the non PC version mostly because the banner that gets slapped on is ugly. Microsoft is the worst with this. Different spine logo color and size & different case color. Looks bad on a shelf.

Some games may have some improvements, there is some Spyro game with bugs fixed.

It's not a big deal to me. I usually just take whichever one is available.

However, if someone gave me the option of choosing a PC release of a game or a non-PC release, I would likely choose the non-PC option.

If I'm getting a 360 game I try to get the regular just cuz I like the green cases vs the silver/grey ones they have for the 'players choice' type.  I just like the look they have on my shelf with all them the same box and labels.

i always go for the original packaging, without concessions to add platinum/greatest hits elements to it. especially relevant for playstation games - eu platinum stick out just as badly as the green us greatest hits releases. i'll happily buy a rerun, like atlus has been doing lately for some ps2 smts, as long as they're using the same designs as the original releases.

Its not too big of a deal for me as long as the box and/or cover look like the "normal" release. I don't like ANY of my games sticking out like a sore thumb.

Hence why i made this for everyone years ago (not greatest hits but a good example of what i'm talking about)

Like most, I prefer the original cases, but I won't turn down a great deal just because a game's the Greatest Hits/Platinum Hits/Player's Choice version.

I'd rather have what you call Black Label since I don't like the ugly additions they make to the case.

Personally, I'm the oddball here that goes for the Greatest Hits/Player's Choice/Platinum/whatever versions.  Chances are that if there is a bugfix or improved version, it'll all be contained on that version.  Sure, you lose some of the glitches and whatnot, but glitches aren't what I play the games for.  As for having them stick out, that's the whole point.  These are s'posed to be the top games of the system, the ones most people would put in their top lists.  So I actually like having them stand out and make a difference.

  • Coffee... What would I do without you?
I personally prefer the original releases. I like things to look as uniform as possible on my shelves, so much so that I separate my black label and platinum games when organizing them.

In theory? Sure.

In practice? Just looking at my own collection... I wouldn't consider Frogger (PS1) or Pac-Man World 2 (GCN) to be in the top lists for their respective systems, but they got the green and yellow package treatments, respectively.

@darrien: makes sense. at least for ps3/360 i'll try to find out what's changed for a rerelease. some classics/platinums do have additional contents. old example: silent hill 2 on the ps2 - ONLY the platinum version has the additional scenario from the xbox-release, making it the superior version to own, even over the old collector's edition with a video-dvd bonus.
