I'll probably be in the minority with "custom"... But I do my own customs, so that's why I like 'em! ;D If I didn't have such artistic abilities, I would go retail

This, but damn the custom is tempting sometimes! There are some great artists here.

As far as I'm concerned, SNES vertical retail is what I aim for (despite that being a contradiction), but I do love me some customs. Plus, I can make custom covers, whereas I don't have the talent to clean up and make a retail cover.

Which reminds me, I need to go back and finish my Mega Man covers.

Also, to be fair, my customs are sort of in the style of modern retail covers, with art that is either largely based on or pays homage to the original retail art (often both the US and Japanese art at the same time)

90% retail.

There are few exceptions that I want customs for, and I usually just make my own.

It depends on the platform. First I prefer vertical, which is custom for some platforms and retail for others. Then I like uniformed spines.

With some consoles like NES that might just mean having the TCP custom logo on the spine. But with N64 it means having the logos in the correct spot and the green tinted background.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

I voted retail but BOTH for sure. It is system dependent for me.

example:

2600 - custom in one box type
SMS - retail
Genesis - retail, duplicates custom red
NES - retail with developer logo at bottom of spine
SNES - custom vertical
N64 - custom vertical
TurboGrafX - custom "dvd" art

etc..

Everything for the last two generations - retail
