After Beating A Game...
palmer6strings:
I used to be a hardcore rpg fan until about Final Fantay 9 and they seemed to keep getting dumber, (I am still however a rpg fan.) but I lean more towards the action adventure RPGs anymore, like Dragons Dogma, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, fable 1,2 and 3. And of corse Secret of Mana (DA BEST EVAH!!)
But anyway, if you don't like swords, tits, dragons, more tits, and magic tits. Then you may as well stay away from most RPGs.

I haven't really played many RPGs, but I have played every Metal Gear Solid game, and that game series, in my opinion, has a lot better story telling and is way more epic than 80-90% of the fantasy RPGs out there (although I haven't really played any ;)). I guess what turns me off from the traditional RPG is the fantasy themes. I just can't get into dragons, swords, and the like.

A fantastic choice, IMO. Let me know how you like the battle system. Also, luckily for you, there are lots of RPGs with motifs that lean more towards sci-fi and deliver great experiences, so feel free to explore.

if you're not averse to dated graphics then everyone's pretty much agreed rpgs were at their peak in the snes and/or psx era/s - aka the 90's. single best one is suikoden 2, but i wouldn't start with that or nothing will ever live up to it again. hard to say where to begin, but most oldtimers got into the genre with games like chrono trigger and final fantasy vi and vii.
re:thread - most good games are like that. i'll hold off ending it to sidequest and sightsee and keep enjoying it, and after finally ending it i'll think about coming back at a later time. most recent would be dark souls (late to the party) which was a riveting experience. *SPOILERS* spending SO much time getting into the world without any guides or spoilers and fucking loving every second of it, the moment i turned off the lights in anor londo and everything i had been taught throughout my journey started to unravel while my companions were being picked off one by one - at the end i was so confused and distraught i was actually relieved to see it end and go on to new game+. second time through, despite being way better at the game and knowing all the paths, it still took me just as long to finish because i was enjoying my stay so much.
