Tales of Symphonia for Gamecube.
Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana for SNES.

Most of the time I get bored and slowly stop playing to the point of moving on.

There have been a few that left me accomplished but wanting more though.

Chrono Trigger by far. I LOVE... Let me stress this LOVE this game. I still havn't gotten every ending, but most of them. Storyline is great!

But I still feel empty because I feel there needs to be more, and Chrono Cross just doesn't cut it.

You know if it's that good you should just let me have it so I can experience it  ;D

But seriously, it is high on my list of games to buy, I've heard nothing but good things about it. I really love long, epic stories and adventures in video games so Chrono Trigger seems like a game I would really enjoy

If you have a DS, they re-released it on it. I actually enjoyed it just as much as the original (The DS remake has some extra cut scenes in it if I recall correctly.)
Also It's about a quarter of the cost. (Just looked it up on eBay.)

Can you believe it? It's going for around $80!?!?!?

Those cut scenes are actually carry-overs from the PS1 port. They redid the translation for the DS, though, which not everyone was happy with.

Other options, if you don't mind digital copies, are:

They made an iOS port of the DS version, available for $10
The PS1 port is available on PSN for $10, and will run on PS3, PSP, Vita, and probably PS4 once that thing's out
And the original SNES version is on the Wii Virtual Console for $8... Not the Wii U Virtual Console yet, though

Actually, the PS1 port is available new from Square Enix's online store for $15, and that includes FF4. Yes, it's Greatest Hits, but whatever.

I seemed to have forgotten the PS1 version. (I don't personally have it, so it slipped my mind lol.)

I also didn't consider DD versions just for the simple fact that it's not an in hand product.

But yes there is many ways to play it, it seems.  ;)

Sorry for hijacking the thread lol.

I think that a lot of games could benefit from a "New game+" mode. It's one of the things I've always wanted in the Assassin's Creed games at the least. It greatly increases a games replay value.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

What?! How the?! ??? ... Do you own any Nintendo systems? If so, do yourself a favor and get some Zelda games. Definitely one of the best franchises out there.
Yeah. I have an NES, SNES, N64, Game Boy, GBA, DS, Gamecube and Wii. I just never had any Nintendo systems growing up, so I guess I never got into any of them. Plus, I'm not really a big RPG guy. The closest thing to an RPG that I really love is Symphony of the Night. I've been really meaning to get into RPGs lately, do you have any suggestions of where to start?

Well, Zelda games aren't really as much RPG as they are Action so they are actually a good start if you don't play RPGs. There are so many great RPGs like Chrono Trigger that was mentioned above or most Square franchises really (i.e. Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Super Mario RPG). I really enjoyed SRPGs (Strategy Role Playing Games) such as Final Fantasy Tactics or Advance Wars Edit: Forgot Fire Emblem, one of my favorites when I was starting to play RPGs.

That's tough to call, Kyle. Do you want to kinda wet your feet on something that isn't strictly RPG just to become acquainted with some similar concepts, or do you want to jump right in and just try out a straight-up RPG?

If the former, listen to Nacho. He's got some good suggestions. If the latter, here's my thoughts on it.

Since RPGs are pretty well-spread out across the consoles, I'd say you should first pick a system you'd like to play an RPG on, keeping in mind the style of games present on those systems (for example: wanna play something with 2D sprites? Might wanna load up the SNES or Genesis.) Next, do a bit of research to put together a small list of the RPGs other people recommend for that system, and try to get a sort of brief synopsis on their stories. Nothing that gives too much away, but just a general picture, and see what sounds most interesting to you. If more than one sound interesting, then maybe try out the one with the most appealing character design or exciting-looking screenshots. If you're not having fun or don't find the story as interesting as you'd thought, don't force yourself through it, no matter what the game is or how good people insist it is. Worth is in the eye of the beholder.

Once you've put some time into a few RPGs, you'll have a better idea of what kind of game/battle mechanics you prefer, and maybe even have a better idea of the kinds of stories you tend to favor, and those in turn will naturally lead you on to other games with similar features.

I don't know if that helped at all, but I hope it did. Good luck.

I think I'm gonna go with Parasite Eve. It doesn't seem too "RPG-ish," and I think I can get into the story pretty easily. I haven't really played many RPGs, but I have played every Metal Gear Solid game, and that game series, in my opinion, has a lot better story telling and is way more epic than 80-90% of the fantasy RPGs out there (although I haven't really played any ;)). I guess what turns me off from the traditional RPG is the fantasy themes. I just can't get into dragons, swords, and the like.

I used to be a hardcore rpg fan until about Final Fantay 9 and they seemed to keep getting dumber, (I am still however a rpg fan.) but I lean more towards the action adventure RPGs anymore, like Dragons Dogma, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, fable 1,2 and 3. And of corse Secret of Mana (DA BEST EVAH!!)

But anyway, if you don't like swords, tits, dragons, more tits, and magic tits. Then you may as well stay away from most RPGs.

A fantastic choice, IMO. Let me know how you like the battle system. Also, luckily for you, there are lots of RPGs with motifs that lean more towards sci-fi and deliver great experiences, so feel free to explore.

if you're not averse to dated graphics then everyone's pretty much agreed rpgs were at their peak in the snes and/or psx era/s - aka the 90's. single best one is suikoden 2, but i wouldn't start with that or nothing will ever live up to it again. hard to say where to begin, but most oldtimers got into the genre with games like chrono trigger and final fantasy vi and vii.

re:thread - most good games are like that. i'll hold off ending it to sidequest and sightsee and keep enjoying it, and after finally ending it i'll think about coming back at a later time. most recent would be dark souls (late to the party) which was a riveting experience. *SPOILERS* spending SO much time getting into the world without any guides or spoilers and fucking loving every second of it, the moment i turned off the lights in anor londo and everything i had been taught throughout my journey started to unravel while my companions were being picked off one by one - at the end i was so confused and distraught i was actually relieved to see it end and go on to new game+. second time through, despite being way better at the game and knowing all the paths, it still took me just as long to finish because i was enjoying my stay so much.
