Well, I just beat Ocarina of Time for the first time (embarrassing, I know). Now I've got this nice, but empty feeling, like I'm so excited that I beat the game but so disappointed that it's over. I've got that feeling before, but not as often with games as books. It's only long, epic games with good "universes" that get me like this.

So, what are some games that made you feel like that and what about after finishing OoT?

After beating a game I'll put it on the game shelf for a while then if I am really bored I'll put it in and do some mop up on it.  (Achievements/collectables/unlockables)

Usually I find something to fill the void of beating a game to be filled with a new one.

Any Zelda or Lego Game.

As for OoT, there is always the Master's Quest (either in 3DS OoT or the Zelda Collector's edition on GameCube) and Majora's Mask.

Man, I remember the first time I tried to beat OoT and failed when I got stuck in Water Temple. I gave up for a few months before I tried again and finally beat it. After that I played other Zelda games to fill the in the void. Same thing happened to me with Super Metroid.

I remember when I decided I wanted to go for 100% completion on Dead Rising. 2 hours represent a day in Dead Rising, so the 7day survivor achievement takes 14 hours straight to accomplish and it's worth 20 gamerscore. It really is 14 hours straight, there's no pausing and your health drains continually so you have to stay at the controller and continue making grocery runs just to stay alive.

1st attempt: I was 13.5 hours into this 14 hour achievement and... I don't know what happened. I got swarmed by a giant mob of zombies while getting shot at by Carlito or whatever his name is and all of the sudden I was just dead and it was over. I was very dismayed and got pretty upset over not making it to 14 hours.

2nd attempt: Everything was going fine until my xbox360 froze froze the screen 7 hours in.

3rd attempt: Made it 14 hours, but my 360 sounded like it was hyperventilating by the end of the session and the game's visuals started to look funny towards the end like the 360 was overheating to the point of a total meltdown or something.

Call of Duty2 on veteran was another good game that made me crazy with frustration a few times. I had a tough time with finishing that one, but I made it eventually.

Lol OoT was a game that I got so attached too that I ended up doing multiple runs.  Then again back in the day games were few and far between so I had to make the most of what I had. 1 100% run, a run with no gold skulltula coins or heart pieces...or just tried to finish off ganon any way I could.  Deku nuts were the most interesting since I didn't realize it'd cause him damage lol.

As for other games...theres been only one so far that I can remember that left me feeling unsatisfied.  Ffxiii-2.  I enjoyed the game and 1000/1000 it but it felt so unsatisfying...I know I ended up playing another rpg to try to fill the void but I cant remember what it was

I felt more empty after OOT when I beat the final boss, It was kinda lame and way to easy, Like most of the bosses.
It did feel weird being done with the game after spending hours running around in the world. I bet the feeling will be worse in MM, that game has such a great fleshed out world. If you play it, I suggest spending a good chunk of time in the main town when you start, living through the 3 days a couple of time.

Majora's Mask mostly just stressed me out :( The anxiety it caused for me, knowing that I had a very small window of time in which to complete a set of tasks, really sucked a lot of the joy out of the game for me. Zelda has always been about exploration and freedom. I like the long stretches of overworld exploration and treasure hunting juxtaposed with the intense puzzle solving and battles of the underworld dungeons.  In both instances I am able to take my time and enjoy the scenery (at least most of the time). I felt as though I had to rush through MM, and as a result, I have very little recollection of what the game even looks like or the bosses I battled, or what I did to progress from one situation to the next, etc. I would have loved it so much more had it not been for that whole impending doom thing :(

Anyway, after a long, epic game, I tend to play something short and sweet. Portal 2 was the last game that I can recall which left me with that "aw, it's over?" Feeling. I played Beautiful Katamari afterwards :D

  • Coffee... What would I do without you?
Most recently that would be The Last of Us, and before that Far Cry 3. Over the 20 years, that have been a few games that have had that impact on me. As a kid that would have been Castle of Illusion and Power Rangers The Movie.

Moving on to the PS1, N64, and Gameboy era, that would have been Final Fantasy VII, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Oddworld Abes Oddyssey, Oddworld Abes Exodus, Metal Gear Solid, and Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. Tombi would have been another one I suppose. I only got Tombi last year, however I got a demo of Tombi years ago, and I must of played through the entire demo 4 or 5 times. I loved that demo and knew I had to get it.

During the PS2, GC, and Xbox era it would have been Shadow of the Colossus, Final Fantasy X, Halo 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Metroid Fusion, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, and Dynasty Warriors 3. I'm sure there were a few others, but I can't think if them off of the top of my head. Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes was a big one as well. I played that game through every mode, got every dog tag, beat it 10 or more times. Its the one game I have never got bored of.

For generation 7 consoles, it would have been Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core, The Last of Us, Far Cry 3, Journey, Alan Wake, The Walking Dead, The Elders Scrolls V: Skyrim, Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots, Portal 2, and Castlevania Order of Ecclesia. There's probably a few more that I'm not thinking of, but there you have it.

For generation 8 thus far, there's been nothing.

Tales of Symphonia for Gamecube.
Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana for SNES.

Most of the time I get bored and slowly stop playing to the point of moving on.

There have been a few that left me accomplished but wanting more though.

I remember playing Final Fantasy3 way back when. On my first play, I got all the way to the airship and became stuck there because my characters weren't leveled up enough. I couldn't make it to the next save area.

I started all the way from the beginning and leveled the crap out of everyone before I stepped onto the airship in the next attempt. That was a great game.

Hey guys. What's goin' on in this tread? Oh Zelda? Yeah, I've never played any of them, much less beaten any.

What?! How the?! ??? ... Do you own any Nintendo systems? If so, do yourself a favor and get some Zelda games. Definitely one of the best franchises out there.

Chrono Trigger by far. I LOVE... Let me stress this LOVE this game. I still havn't gotten every ending, but most of them. Storyline is great!

But I still feel empty because I feel there needs to be more, and Chrono Cross just doesn't cut it.
