I've been lusting after some of the rarer games still missing from my snes collection recently. Action games like Demons Crest, Ninja Warrior, and Castlevania Dracula X as well as some RPGs I need like Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Super Mario RPG.

The Super Famicom games typically go for about half price on ebay. The non-English text would rule out the RPGs for me, but is it worth it to go for the SFam versions for some of the aciton titles? I know I'll have to modify a couple plastic bits on my SNES to play SFam games, but beyond that and the in game Japanese text, are there any other pros/cons to intermixing an snes collection with sfam? I know it sounds corny, but for some reason I'd just prefer to have the snes versions over the sfam but paying double for that seems crazy.
Did you buy some of your rare game titles from other regions to save a few bucks? Any regrets with region mixing?

My collection is mixed, for sure.  But I typically only buy imports of games that weren't released in the US and I don't think any of mine are part of the "rare" category at the moment.

Yeah, I'm pretty torn about it. I'm watching play through videos of Demons Crest/Blazon and Dracula X to see what I'd miss text wise with the Fam versions. I was thinking about maybe doing a laminated translation card inside the case with a copy of Famicom Demons Blazon. The menu for the different potions and spells on Demons Crest looks like it could be tricky at first until I learned what everything meant if I opt for the Demons Blazon Fam version.

As much as I'd like to have the US English text version for every one of my games, it's hard to justify when I compare these prices.

Now that SNES price for the 2 games is on the high side. You could probably shave $50 off of that with some auction hunting, but that's still more than twice the price for the same games. That English text is expensive!

I'm with ya on the subject. I have a pretty good sized list of SNES games that I still want in my collection, but prices are getting obnoxious, and even SFC prices are going way up. People are getting wise to this tactic and the gap seems to be narrowing.

For a lot of the pricey stuff on my list, I'll prolly just wait for the bubble to burst or continue to be on the hunt for deals and get things through trades.

If you are going to buy Dracula X on the Sufami, just get a Wii and download the PC Engine CD version of Castlevania Dracula X, it is much better, or is the Wii Virtual Console gone?

But some games on the Sufami had an english translation on the cart, like Super Metroid

I just can't get over the language barrier, no matter how much cheaper a Japanese version might be.

I know that the RetroN 5 will play FC/SFC carts, but I suspect those emulators to go forever unused on my console.

English translated repros on the other hand, I'm willing to give a shot.
My DS Cover Requests: Anno 1701, A Witch's Tale, A Witch's Wish, Black Sigil, Dynasty Warriors, Flower Sun and Rain, Mage Knight Destiny's Soldier, n+, Time Ace

I have this weird compulsion to have the game in cart form even though I do have a hacked wii that I can play on.

I finally reached a decision last night and went with the snes Demon's Crest cart at about double the cost of the sfc version. It feels a little crazy to spend so much more, but I really want the game, English and in cart form, and there's no cover for Demon's Blazon available. Demon's Blazon isn't exactly cheap, so not understanding the text and not having a proper case for the game will drive me nuts.

There is a pretty awesome looking cover for the sfc version of Dracula X and there wasn't  too much text in a play through I watched. If the price remains at a 1/3 of the snes version at some point I'll probably go with a sfc copy of the game in addition to my digital copies. http://www.thecoverproject.net/view.php?cover_id=9350

I do this every now and then. For example, I have Mega Man X2 / X3, Megaman 7 and Hagane as SFC versions. All super expensive as original NTSC carts. I'm gonna try and get games like Super Ghouls'n'ghosts and Demon's blazon as well, since there's not much text there.

Super G&G isn't really that pricey. I saw a copy at a local shop for $15 yesterday.

If english versions exist I want them. JP only for JP only games. ;)

I don't care if EU or US though.
