I don't usually post in these threads here, because, frankly, y'all seem to get much more cool stuff than I do.

However, I got something really cool this month.  In a way, it's been a dream item of mine, although, I didn't really know that this particular machine existed until about a month ago.

A Nintendo "Red Tent" arcade machine from the Vs. Dual System line.  This thing is awesome, it's got one of these screens going down each side.  Some games work together, so you can play 2 (or, in the case of Tennis, four players!) on each side.  You can swap out the ROM chips inside to support different games.  It came with Vs. Mach Rider and Vs. Golf.  I drove roughly 27 hours in two days to pick it up and bring it home. :D

But, it gets better!
Serial Number Plate:

It's number 00069!  Jokes aside, it's a really, really early system.

My own, working, 100% legal, Vs. Super Mario Bros. game!

This is what I've wanted all along - a playable copy of Vs. Super Mario Bros.  Nintendo has failed to placate me by releasing this on the Virtual Console and those dirty repo sites have been taunting me with it forever... but, finally, it's all mine! :D

But this is when it gets fun.  While I had the machine "apart", pulling the board out, I found a little packet of index cards inside...

Appears to be a log of some sorts that the original owners would use to record repairs and such done on the machine.  The date on the first entry?  3/20/1984.  KLOV lists the machine as coming out in 1985, but that is incorrect.  I shot out a few e-mails and got an answer from someone who knows their stuff - Nintendo debuted these machines in Chicago in February 1984 (along side Punch-Out!!).  This means the shop that got this originally (and, sadly, I have no idea how to track that info down) got this machine after it had been available for, at most, 48 days.  It pre-dates the NES release by about a year and a half. :D

Really proud of this bugger.  Who wants to make a cover for it? How many UGCs will I need to cut/glue together? :D

Wow UncleBob, that thing is AWESOME. I've always admired your commitment to all things Nintendo, but driving 27 hours over two days to pick that thing up is pretty damn impressive. Can you tell us a little more about the trip, how you found out about the machine, etc?

I bet if you did a little research you can probably find someone who could reprogram eproms  for you with what ever Vs. games you desire on them. Seeing as there's people who can bring dead CPS2 boards back to life by reprogramming the eproms (I had my 2 D&D arcade boards done), it doesn't seem like much of a stretch to think someone could reprogram Vs. games if its simple as swapping out the rom set.

Totally epic pick-up btw! I didn't even know these existed. I definitely want one, but I don't want to imagine what these things are worth...

Apparently, it's possible - with some exceptions.

Each game is made up of several chips.  The ROMs themselves are apparently pretty easy to program.  Apparently, the PPUs are not - and there are a handful of different PPUs.  Each PPU acts like a security chip - one PPU might work with a few different games, so you could flash some ROM chips to work with that PPU, but it'd have to be one of a few games.  Then, to make things more complicated, there are games that come on "daughter boards" and are virtually impossible to recreate.

This site has all kinds of interesting information on it, including some video tutorials that explain everything I just said a lot clearer.

Well...  How I found the machine isn't all that impressive... I found it on eBay. ;)
Up until about two months ago, I would randomly check eBay for local arcade machines.  I've always wanted one (or a few), but was never very serious about it.  After a bit of a spell of not checking, I went on and checked and saw that I had missed a Nintendo Playchoice 10 machine that sold for $500 and was located less than 1 1/2 hours from me.  I was *pissed*.

So, I started checking eBay about every two days or so, just to see what else popped up.  I wasn't going to let another cool, cheap, and local system pass me by like that.  Found this unit listed, fell in love, and decided I wanted it, 27 hour drive be damned!  Thrilled that I did, too, because it is an awesome little machine.

If I ever become crazy rich, I'd love to take it to an auto body shop and have them work out the dents, repaint it, etc., etc.  It's an amazing machine and I would love to give it the TLC it deserves. :D

To be fair, I'm not that far from either of you (considering the drive to pick it up in the first place).  Wiggy and I have discussed our distances and according to the state in your profile, palmer can't be more than 6-8 hours away. ;)

It'd be cool if you guys documented the restoration of the Nintendo arcade. You ever see American Restoration?
